Views, vistas and a warm soak

Adventure in Kinloch, Taupō, NZ
As we stepped through the doors of Muirs Reef Lodge, our eyes were immediately drawn to the breathtaking view beyond the glass doors—across the deck, out to the picture-perfect expanse of Lake Taupo, beautifully framed by rolling green hills and distant mountains.

Eager to make the most of it, we filled the outdoor baths and soon found ourselves immersed in a long, relaxing soak, completely absorbed in the stunning scenery that was ours alone for the weekend.

As evening fell and stars began to scatter across the sky, we moved indoors to the living room, where a crackling fire and a good movie provided the perfect end to our first night.

The next day began with poached eggs and tea enjoyed on the deck, followed by a short drive down the road to Kinloch for a peaceful walk along the beach. The town’s tranquil charm made it feel like we’d been whisked away to a quiet island escape.

We stopped by the Kinloch Golf Club Café for some delicious treats and drinks, then set off to explore a few nearby trails. While there’s no shortage of activities around Kinloch, we were drawn back to the comfort of the lodge, wanting to soak up every moment. As the sun dipped once again, we seized the chance to run another hot bath and unwind outdoors, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature.

The view alone makes Muirs Reef Lodge a must-see. But it was the outdoor baths, cosy beds, and peaceful atmosphere that truly left a lasting impression—this place has definitely become a must-stay for us whenever we're in the area.

A beautiful short forest walk to an open area between huge native trees. In winter this usually fills with water creating a lagoon, however it was dry when we visited. The trail is gorgeous though and well worth a visit.

A nice little cafe with gorgeous views right on the golf course. The coffee is great and they have a good selection of cabinet food and menu items.

On a clear night the starry sky is breathtaking at Muirs Reef Lodge. Either relax in the outdoor bath or on the deck with a snuggly blanket and look for shooting stars under the milky way.

On the far south side of Kinloch beach you can find a lot of pumice (a light porous volcanic rock often used for foot care). Also fun for small kids to throw in the lake and watch as they float away.
