Take yourself back in time with a unique slow stay experience in a late 1800s bark hut. Located on a working farm that backs onto the bushland of the Wingello State Forest, you can transport yourself away from the day-to-day, immerse yourself in nature and get back to basics.

Stringy Bark Hut is brimming with old-world charm. It's rustic, it's earthy and it's one of the few remaining huts of its kind.

Originally built by a family of timber cutters in the mid-1890s, they lived in the hut with their nine children. Restored in 2017, the hut's heritage character has been carefully preserved.

Beautifully fitted out with a few little luxuries to ensure your comfort, Stringy Bark hut offers the perfect destination for a romantic weekend, a memorable family experience or a fabulous trip with friends.

You will wake up to trill of morning bird songs and kangaroos feeding on the surrounding pasture. Moments walk from your hut, you'll find yourself in the adjoining forest surrounded by 100-year-old gums - perfect for forest bathing, spotting the resident lyrebirds or just taking in enormous big gulps of fresh air.

You'll come home from your adventures to a hot shower and a cold drink on the verandah, overlooking views of the valley.

Additional Information

The hut has two bedrooms, a queen bed in the master bedroom and a bunk room with two singles. The bathroom (inside the hut) offer hot showers and a flushing toilet.

The hut runs totally off-grid, running off solar for power.

Inclusions:
- french linen bedding, towels and tea towels
- organic teas, freshly ground coffee, hot chocolate supplies
- basic kitchen essentials (pots, pans, crockery, s&p, oil, vinegar)
- gas stovetop and BBQ for cooking
- generous firewood supply
- fabulous views and an endless supply of fresh air

We have a self-check-in system, but will be available during your stay via phone. We provide you with a detailed handbook that will provide all the information you should need about the hut, the property and the surrounding area.

Wingello State Forest is known to have some of the best mountain bike trails in the region, but also some fantastic bushwalking options. Further afield, the rainforests of Morton National Park are a great place to explore, particularly the Erith Coal Mine track at Bundanoon or the nearby Fairy Bower Falls walk.

Beyond exploring the natural surrounds, the local villages of Wingello, Tallong and Bundanoon are just moments away. Perfect for stocking up on supplies or heading to the Bundanoon pub for a long lunch.

The Southern Highlands region is a hot spot for foodies – fabulous pubs and restaurants, farmers markets, wineries, distilleries, breweries, foraging trips and the list goes on. You'll also be spoilt for choice with outdoor adventures, farm visits, festivals, galleries, shopping for antiques and homewares and plenty of crafty courses too.

The hut is located on a working farm. Please stick to existing graded roads when driving around the property, shut the gates behind you and please do not approach the farm animals. No lighting fires anywhere on the property.

Take note of local fire bans, weather conditions and follow the safety guidelines provided in the handbook.

There are a number of potential hazards for small children including an unfenced dam and creek in close proximity to the hut. Any children on the property need to be supervised at all times.

Strictly no smoking in the hut, including on the verandah - the hut is made of bark, after all.

What an incredible place! Sitting atop a hill and surrounded by lush green paddocks, the hut feels worlds away from everything. Ultra-rustic, yet decked out in creature comforts like linen sheets, hot... water bottles, delectable drinking chocolate, freshly ground coffee and an abundance of firewood, it was so easy to settle in here. Then there's the wood-fired bathtub – wow! We settled in for the day moving between reading in the sun-soaked converted wheat silo and the scalding hot bath. Absolutely glorious! Thank you so much for having us at this incredible place. No notes.

Great set up with everything you could need for your stay. Surprisingly warm hut for the middle of winter with lots to do in the local areas. Would 100% come stay again.

From the fireplace to the views across open farmland, just can not look away from Stringy Bark. My young family enjoyed the large fenced area to run around and explore the open fields around the hut. ...Having a fireplace keeping the hut nice and warm against the chill of the early morning or late afternoon allowed us to enjoy some time away from a screen and enjoy family time. Listening to the magpipes in the morning, to seeing kangaroos and wombats in the evening, it was a weekend away from the busy life that we needed.

After a few decades of living in the big smoke, we moved our family away from the crammed craziness of city life to the Southern Highlands, a place that offered a slower pace with more space. We’ve loved every aspect of this transition – fresh air, room to roam and for the kids to run like wild, space to grow our own produce and to tread a lighter environment footprint. The idea of Wildernest came about after having countless conversations with our city friends wanting to escape the city for a break, wanting to unplug, unwind and to take a break from it all. So we created T1 and T2 tiny houses in one of the most beautiful spots we know. The idea being a totally off-the-grid escape, one that is eco-friendly and treads lightly on its beautiful surrounds, but still has all the little luxuries.

Exploring The Views Of Long Point Lookout

Long Point Lookout is a beautiful view of the Shoalhaven River and the views across the Southern Highlands. The kids loved looking for wildlife from up high and couldn't believe how such a landscape existed so close to flat farmlands.

This lookout offers inspiring views of the beautiful Shoalhaven Gorge and river. The lookout is located just outside of the township of Tallong.

Bushwalking

There are plenty of bushwalking options in the area and many of them are easy and available for the little ones to enjoy too. We found this short track (or you could go further and make it a long one) close by one lookout we wanted to go to. The wildlife and the bush offered us a beautiful escape.

Lovers Walk Track

This track connects Echo Point picnic area with Bonnie View. Meander through open forest and take in the scenic views. In spring look out for beautiful wildflowers and Gang Gang Cockatoos year round.

Bushwalking

A popular bushwalking and cycling destination in the picturesque Southern Highlands. The town of Bundanoon is located on the edge of Morton National Park making it the ideal place for bushwalking. Take in the spectacular wilderness and great walking trails.

Fairy Bower Falls

Starting at the Gambells Rest Picnic area or the Fairy Bower car park in the Morton National Park. The walks to the falls offer wonderful views of the waterfall and a picnic area. Don’t miss the view at Tooths Lookout. The walk is a one hour loop, medium to steep.
