Miner’s Cottage Riverdowns is an amazing stay. My husband and I stayed at the cottage with our two dogs and we had such an incredible time. The property is absolutely stunning - right on the Howqua Ri...ver, and the restored cottage itself is cozy, clean, well maintained and so unique. Andy is a great host - super friendly! Also had a few welcome visits by Ruffy, Riverdowns’ resident dog. The stay is in a convenient location - almost halfway in between Mansfield and Jamieson. We would definitely recommend staying at Miner’s Cottage.

Morning Coffee By The River
We woke at sunrise to the garden glistening with frost, the river right at our doorstep. We made fresh coffee and took in the view from the bench that overlooks it all. We walked along the river edge and stumbled upon some chunky little wombats and colourful lorikeets who seemed to enjoy our snacks. Don't forget to say hi to Bobby. You will know when you see him ;)

On The Property
The property features park like gardens with magnificent trees, a river walk and a dam full of yabbies. Enjoy the kangaroos, birds, deer, wombats and other animals that abound. Stroll by the river or simply relax by the water in the shade of the 100 year old oak tree and be mesmerized by the sound of the flowing river.
Fly Fishing
Riverdowns is at the centre of one of Australia’s most famous freshwater fisheries. Fly Fishing instruction and guiding can be arranged for guests and visitors. Our guide, Andy Matenson, has over 20 years professional guiding experience. He guides in Victorias High Country, New England, New Zealand and the Snowy Mountains. He is an Internationally Certified Instructor and is an executive member of Australia’s Professional Instructors and Guides Association.

Howqua River
Whilst the sun was at it’s peak we swam in the river right behind the house.

Mt Buller
We hiked up Mt Buller summit which only takes around 20 minutes, it’s a little steep but an easy hike. Mt Stirling offers a hike to Craig's hut which is a 1hr 45min return.
Mt Buller Sunset
To our surprise, we discovered Mt Buller was only 45 minutes away, yet felt like a completely different world. A ski resort hosting one of the most vibrant sunsets we have ever seen. Quick note: There is a steep little entry fee to access the resort, however, we felt it was well worth the view. Especially if you're a skier or snowboarder.

Sunset
Later into the afternoon we headed to the Mt Buller summit carpark, grabbed a day tent and found a sweet spot on the ridge to watch the sun go down with the most magnificent pastel purples I have ever seen. Sunrise or sunset this spot is perfect for 360 degree views with the mountain to ourselves.
