Hilltop Cabin in the Hinterlands
Adventure in Yelgun, North Coast, NSW, AU
We arrived at our secluded cabin after a beautiful scenic drive through the Byron Hinterland. From its rolling green hills and majestic farmland to historic towns and sub-tropical rainforests, we knew we were in for a great escape.
On our arrival we were immediately greeted by the most friendly neighbours, a family of goats grazing at our doorstep. The cabin was fully self-sustainable and off-grid, allowing us to unwind, disconnect and immerse ourselves in nature. Not only did it offer a unique earthy-living, but it also had a modern interior with polished concrete and a beautiful wood fireplace next to the reading nook. The scenic outdoor bath really topped it off.
The cabin is in an ideal location away from the crowds but only a short distance from the action. The nearby towns of Byron, Mullumbimby, and Brunswick Heads offer endless cafes and restaurants to choose from. As well as beautiful walks, waterfalls, and one of the most iconic surf beaches on the east coast.
From sitting by the fire, drinking wine whilst playing the guitar to waking up to a beautiful sunrise on the balcony sipping coffee, it's safe to say we'll be back here again.

Things We Did
- Farm
- Surf
- Winery
- Lookout
- Camping
We stopped at the farm as we were making our way into Byron. Little did we know, this place not only offered an incredible lunch menu but also a scenic view of the farm animals and gardens surrounding it. Definitely worthwhile stopping here as the food, wine and views are amazing.
The pass is one of the most iconic surf spots on the east coast. We managed to time it well with the surf forecast and got incredible longboard waves. Would recommend visiting this point break whether you're looking to surf or a nice walk to the beautiful lighthouse nearby. There's also a good chance you'll spot a pod of dolphins here.
After a long day at the beach, we decided to stop in at the Balcony Oyster bar for dinner. The Balcony is overlooking the main street in Byron which had live music on every street corner. Would recommend this place to anyone that's looking for a funky lively place to indulge in fresh seafood and wine.
St. Helena is one of the best views of Byron and the hinterland. We stopped to take photos of the amazing views then ended up hanging out with the cows for much longer than expected. Needless to say, they were very friendly!
At the cabin, we had a picnic on the balcony with stunning views of the valley followed by a campfire. We were able to chop our own wood and use it for both the indoor and outdoor fire pit. Funnily, we were greeted with the goats on arrival but they didn't stick around once it got smokey!
