An Ironbark Escape into the Woods
Adventure in Maldon, Goldfields, VIC, AU
After work on Friday, we hit the road for a relaxing weekend in the countryside. We drove into the historic town of Maldon and met our very welcoming hosts, Murray and Melinda, who introduced us to their beautifully designed home inspired by minimalism and eco living. We ventured to the Maldon Hotel that night for a nice feed, then spent the rest of the evening by the fire back at Ironbark.
The next morning, we were greeted by misty fog and a wet start to the Saturday as we ate pancakes by the fire place. We took the road to Trentham Falls, stopping via Mount Franklin on the way, and were left in awe by the autumn colours and massive trees surrounding us. After exploring the falls, we had lunch in Daylesford, picked up some local cheeses and a nice whiskey, then ventured back home. The sun had come out, so we got the indoor fire going and lit up the outdoor fire pit too. We relaxed into the afternoon by playing guitar, drinking whiskey and gin on the rocks and enjoying the local cheese platter. Later, we cooked a couple of steaks from the local butcher.
It was a sunny start to our Sunday, so we decided to relax on the hammock outside and listen to the birds surrounding us. We cooked up scrambled eggs for breakfast using the fresh eggs from Murray and Melinda's chooks, then got ready to head home. We stopped by the French cafe in Maldon's main street to grab a couple of coffees and a danish and, on the way home, reminisced over a slow weekend to remember.
