Humble Hobbit Home
Adventure in Bainbridge Island, Peninsulas, WA, US
I sailed away from Seattle and towards the Shire, now conveniently located on Bainbridge Island. Upon arrival, I was greeted with lush, green pastures and Bilbo Baggins himself as my temporary roommate.
The Hobbit House is humble in size, but filled to the brim with amenities and warm touches from the thoughtful host. The walls display a gallery of illustrations left behind from previous guests and one is encouraged to work on art while staying there – there are art supplies aplenty!
The day after I arrived, I drove to the Smithshyre for some much-needed baby goat time with my friend Vera and her beau. We snuggled goats, dogs, a cat, and even came across baby turkeys and sheep. Rejuvenated from animal love, I headed to the Grand Forest to walk for hours in silence among the mossy trees. At night, I returned to my Hobbit House and witnessed the most glorious sunset. Sleep came easy after a soul-nourishing day, and the bed itself was heaven.
The following morning, I said goodbye to the mythical landscape and headed for downtown Bainbridge. I grabbed some coffee at Pegasus and walked along the Winslow Wharf Marina to gaze at boats and the crashing waves.
If you’re ever in need of a place to reset and return to your childish wonder, the Humble Hobbit Home is not only precious (Gollum-free), but a quick boat ride away.

Things We Did
- Farm
- Forest
- Walk
The Smithshyre not only offers farm tours and private alone time to cuddle baby goats, but also runs goat yoga sessions! Definitely contact them for some much needed animal snugs – you might end up adopting one on the spot.
The Grand Forest is grand enough to be partitioned into two giant sections: East and West. Walk along the dozens of trails among giant mossy trees and sit beside the creek for a little bit of TLC.
Right behind Pegasus Coffee is the Winslow Wharf Marina, where you can follow the wooden trail to peer at boats and crashing waves. I highly recommend grabbing some coffee and going for a morning stroll over here before heading back to the ferry.
