Rainbow Season at Wilsons Prom

On a cold week in June, when all of Melbourne is heading to the snow, you won't find too many people down at Wilsons Prom. Luckily, this makes it the perfect time to visit the comfy Banksia Cabin at Yanakie House. We had the whole place to ourselves and barely ran into another soul on our adventures down the Prom. It's only 20 minutes to the charming town of Fish Creek, which is a great place for a coffee or just to geek out at the Art Deco-style pub....

As the weather began to turn, we went to Fish Creek Hotel for dinner. It's a rustic, humble pub about 20 minutes away from Yanakie. Here you'll be able to grab a great chicken parma, a pot of pale ale and sit in front of the fire. If you’re feeling competitive, they also have a pool table. There also used to be a fish on the roof, but we assume that swam away....

As we arrived slightly before our check-in time, we spent some time checking out the Big Drift – a dramatic, almost apocalyptic landscape of vast sand dunes and native trees. You’d swear you were in the Middle East! Be sure to take a stick or two with you to mark your tracks, as the wind can blow away your footsteps. We were lucky enough to witness a beautiful rainbow upon the horizon of the national park....

We headed down to Wilsons Prom National Park and parked up at Tidal River, where we began our walk to Squeaky Beach. It was definitely blowy, but don’t let that hold you back from witnessing emus, wombats, rosellas, tea trees and breathtaking seascapes. Make sure you bring a beanie, walking shoes and a raincoat just in case! Unfortunately, the name Squeaky Beach doesn't quite hold up when there's this much wind and rain, but having been in the summer, I can confirm it usually squeaks like a chew toy....

In the morning, we went to a cafe called Long John Pickles. I had the most phenomenal omelette made from local ingredients. It had native spices, pulled lamb and caramelised onion with a side of crispy Turkish bread. Adam ordered creamy scrambled eggs with bacon and hash browns and was definitely impressed. Before you leave, be sure to check out their Bloody Mary and margarita salts for when you make your next cocktail....
