Two Nights in a Moroccan-Inspired Tent

I'm not what one would consider a "camping" type of person most of the time. Don't get me wrong—I love connecting with the outdoors, but staying in a tent and getting a good night's sleep just seemed like incompatible concepts to me. Until last week.

When I saw photos of Ron and Denise's luxurious space on Whidbey Island, I was quick to jump at the chance to try something new. My friend Julie agreed to join me for an indulgent mid-week escape, and we ferried over on a particularly sunny day to find ourselves in a hidden wooded haven.

This Moroccan-inspired tent rests on a private, three-acre residence, and only two tents are available to rent at a time. The property offers a fully equipped modern kitchen, an outdoor shower, a fire pit, endless board games, and an outdoor Tiki bar for guests to enjoy.

I've never felt so welcome and safe while sleeping outdoors before, but Ron and Denise work hard to make guests feel at home. In the morning, we had fresh eggs from their chickens to cook with. At night, there were tastes of local mead and all of the makings for great s'mores.

This experience was like camping at a five-star hotel, but one where you instantly feel like family with the people running it. And while I don't think it's "typical" glamping, I'll take this over a five-star hotel any day.

Langley is a small city on the southern end of Whidbey Island with loads of charm and personality. No chain stores to be found, but plenty of antique shops, restaurants, and specialty stores to explore instead. It's also a great place to hang out by the water.

Whidbey Doughnuts is a playful twist on what you expect from a doughnut shop. Offering a full breakfast and brunch menu, this diner innovates by incorporating all kinds of doughnuts (sweet and savory) into hearty dishes. It's a must-try if you like brunch, doughnuts, and lounging on a patio.

Earth Sanctuary is a unique outdoor space that combines ecology, art, and spirituality. With numerous walking trails, sculptures, and spaces to slow down and connect with nature, it offers a retreat from the day-to-day and an opportunity for reflection.
