Southern Highlands Back in Time
Adventure in Tallong, Country NSW, NSW, AU
Wildernest was an escape from the world as we know it. As soon as we drove through its the gates, we felt like settlers from another time. The simple life is on show here.
The rustic cottage greeted us on arrival. From this point on, the only other life we encountered was the vast number of wombats, kangaroos and cows. The kids felt right at home with all of them. After chopping some firewood and lighting the fire, we rugged up and spent the cold Southern Highlands' night under the glow of a starry sky.
Our mornings were slow, just as we wanted them to be. Coffee on the front deck, thawing out from the cold night before by soaking up the warm morning sun, and then greeting the local cows who came by to say hello.
Leaving the cottage, we found local bushwalking tracks and discovered lookouts that displayed the incredible views and landscapes nearby. After a long day of exploring, we treated ourselves to the local cafe's best treats and a cheeky afternoon coffee pickup.
It was great to find time with the fam and enjoy these moments in a slower setting. Wildernest definitely delivered for that.

Things We Did
- Lookout
- Walk
- Café
Long Point Lookout is a beautiful view of the Shoalhaven River and the views across the Southern Highlands. The kids loved looking for wildlife from up high and couldn't believe how such a landscape existed so close to flat farmlands.
There are plenty of bushwalking options in the area and many of them are easy and available for the little ones to enjoy too. We found this short track (or you could go further and make it a long one) close by one lookout we wanted to go to. The wildlife and the bush offered us a beautiful escape.
After a big day out, we discovered a quiet little cafe in Bundanoon. Often we find places like this close after morning trade, but this spot was still open even as we arrived after 4pm. The kids were treated to some oversized cookies and the parents enjoyed a cheeky late afternoon coffee.
