Coromandel Dreaming

The Coromandel Peninsula is one of New Zealand’s favourite holiday spots, well known for its stretch of beautiful beaches and chilled summer vibe. Hahei is no exception. The Cabin, as its known, is located in the heart of it all, with Hahei Beach and local eateries an easy 5–10 minute walk away. It's beautifully put together, with beachy decor, and its light and airy feel is perfectly fitting for a lovely little coastal retreat.

Cathedral Cove and Hot Water Beach are two local sights not to be missed. Our early start meant a lovely sunrise at Cathedral Cove and a very chilly spring morning dip in the ocean. Hot Water Beach, which we visited later in the day, was a unique version of a relaxing spa – take a spade and dig your own pool in the sand!

Cooks Beach and Ferry Landing are only a short drive away, with Whitianga being easily accessible via a short ferry. Browse the shops and cafes in Whitianga, or if you’re feeling more active, the short walks up from ferry landing will give you amazing views over the town, estuary and bay. Slightly further afield, just outside Coromandel township, you’ll find Driving Creek Railway and Zipline. The narrow gauge railway winds its way up the hill and the zipline tour is a fun way to get back down if you’re feeling adventurous.

The Cabin's hosts, Phil and Sue, were lovely and very willing to provide advice and answer any questions we had regarding activities and information about the area. With everything we needed to feel at home, The Cabin made for a perfect coastal getaway.

Cathedral Cove Is an iconic Kiwi summer hotspot. The walk (30–60 mins, depending on fitness) along the well-formed path is certainly worth the effort. The picture-perfect views, with stunning white sand, clear blue ocean and a famous rock archway, are best enjoyed outside of high tide.

Hot Water Beach is nature’s unique take on a relaxing spa. Take a spade and dig your very own pool, where you can sit and enjoy the naturally heated water. Digging to find the perfect spot is a bit of an art form, but once you find the spot, you’ll be greatly rewarded!

Driving Creek Railway and Zipline is nestled in the hills of Coromandel township. We rode the train halfway up, from the pottery studios to the start of the zipline adventure. We worked our way back down through trees and across gullies and streams using eight exhilarating ziplines, accompanied by our friendly and knowledgeable guides. This is an adventure not to be missed.
