Beachside Bliss
Adventure in Tairua, The Coromandel, NZ
With every visit, the Coromandel Peninsula has a way of welcoming us with its luscious green forests draped over pristine beaches as far as the eye can see. Nothing, not even the tail end of Cyclone Dovi, can dampen the region’s natural beauty and when we arrived at the inviting Tairua Beach Holiday Home, we knew that this was the perfect place to relax for a few days, no matter the weather.
Situated on a hillside, the A-frame with its expansive deck was perfectly positioned to give us views over Tairua, spanning from Mount Paku to the coastline. The sound of crashing waves in the distance completes the perfect beachside atmosphere.
We were just 7 minutes away from Te Karo Bay and as soon as the sky cleared, we headed to the beach where we dug our feet into the silky golden sand. Returning to the holiday home later that day, we made use of the fully equipped kitchen and prepared ourselves some homemade pizzas. With dinner fresh from the oven, we put on a movie and cozied up on the couch to enjoy a relaxing evening.
The following morning the sun shone brightly and the little town of Tairua sprang to life. A short hike to the summit of Mount Paku rewarded us with gorgeous views over the river and the ocean. We then stopped in town for coffee and ice cream before venturing out again to see what the view was like from the nearby summit of Mount Pauanui, it was just as stunning!
Not wanting to leave, we made most of our time on the beach and ended our stay watching the sun set behind the Pinnacles on the horizon, it was absolute bliss.

Things We Did
- Sunset
- Hike
- Walk
- Café
- Ice-creamery
After spending a long day on Pauanui Beach, the nearby wharf felt like the perfect spot to end the day watching the sunset.
A brisk 1-hour hike took us to the summit of Mount Pauanui where we were rewarded with stunning 180-degree views of the area. The track is easy to follow and the bench at the top is a welcome rest stop after 380m of elevation gain.
In terms of views to effort ratio, this walk is a 10/10. An easy 20 - 30 minute walk from the carpark to the summit rewards you with 360 degree views over Tairua and Pauanui.

Somehow a day at the beach doesn't feel complete without some hot chips from the local takeaway, so we made sure to enjoy some on Pauanui Beach while fending off seagulls and watching the crashing waves.
Before heading out to the beach, we stopped at Johnny's in Tairua for some delicious real-fruit ice cream complete with a chocolate fish.
