The sun was setting as we climbed out of the car, casting a golden glow over the Green Tent and the surrounding hills. String lights illuminated the expansive deck, welcoming us in. We found the inside just as warm and inviting as the atmosphere created outside. From the incredibly comfy bed to the heated bathroom and the kitchenette stocked with treats, we immediately fell in love with the place.
After a relaxing morning, we ventured into Matakana to check out the famous weekly market. We visited the many stalls, chatted to the locals and tasted almost everything we could. Taking advantage of the sunny weather, we then decided to explore the nearby Goat Island Marine Reserve, where we found a beautiful coastal walkway to stretch our legs.
Back at the Green Tent, we lit a fire and settled in to enjoy the night. We toasted marshmallows, played games and capped it off with a long, relaxing soak in the outdoor bath. The hardest part of our stay was having to say goodbye, but we cannot wait to visit again!
While exploring Goat Island's beach, we stumbled upon a little walkway along the coastline. It was an easy, two-kilometre walk that ended at a stunning lookout with views over the bay.
Goat Island Marine Reserve is home to a range of wildlife and we were lucky enough to meet some very friendly pied shags as well as other birds and ducks.
A short but steep hike took us to the Dome Forest Lookout, where we were rewarded with views across the valley and out to Warkworth. The lookout is a perfect spot to stop for a snack while enjoying the views.
Hidden in the bush on the side of the motorway between Waiwera and Warkworth, Pohuehue Falls was a welcome discovery. Though it's only a small waterfall, the short, 10-minute walk through native bush provided a welcome stop to break up the drive home.
Open every Saturday from 8am–1pm, the Matakana Village Farmers Market is known for it delicious food stalls, local produce, handmade wares and vibrant atmosphere. We spent several hours touring the stalls, sampling the tasty food and spending more than anticipated. It's a must if you're in Matakana over the weekend!
After a long day exploring Matakana, dinner at the Rusty Pelican is a must-do. Serving up delicious pizzas, including a range of vegetarian options, it was the perfect end to our day.
