An Oceanview Oasis

As we travelled down the gravel driveway, we caught our first glimpse of the stunning view which would serve as the backdrop for our weekend getaway.

Arriving at the cabin, we unpacked our bags and spent the afternoon taking in the view, relaxing in the outdoor bath, and enjoying the call of the occasional Kaka as it flew by. When the sun finally set and the stars came out, we snuggled into the cozy bed and were fast asleep in minutes.

The next day we visited Ti Point Reptile Park and made the acquaintance of the resident tuataras, iguanas, alligators, and tortoises – some smaller than the palm of our hands! Dinnertime saw us headed to a nearby beach with burgers and chips from a local takeaway.

Following another restful sleep, we said goodbye to the little cabin and made our way to Goat Island. With clear skies and sunshine overhead, we rented some clearyak glass bottom kayaks to explore the reserve and experience the marine life up close.

We loved every minute of our visit to the Ocean View Retreat and with so much to do in the area, we know we will be back soon!

Clearyak offers New Zealand's only clear kayak experience and is arguably the best way to explore Motu Hāwere ā Maki (Goat Island) Marine Reserve and experience the marine life up close. Taking advantage of a calm day, we were lucky enough to see whole schools of fish under and around our kayaks. It was such an awesome way to spend an afternoon.

This little beach was recommended to us by a local and we were not disappointed. It's a lovely quiet bay, perfect for a walk, swim or just a picnic while watching the sunset.

A cute little cafe with great coffee and delicious freshly made croissants and other baked goods. The baked treats were so good we went back for seconds the next day.

Leigh eats was recommended to us as the best chippy in town and we have to agree. It's also conveniently located close to the shore so you can grab your takeaways and enjoy while watching a sunset on the beach.
