The Kelly Gang Cottage
Adventure in Beechworth, High Country, VIC, AU
Having not seen my brother in years thanks to the pandemic, he finally made it out to Melbourne for a visit. I decided to show him around regional Victoria where I spend a heap of time, more specifically Beechworth and the surrounding area.
We stayed in the Marlo Cottage, which housed Beechworth historical photographer J E Bray who took the famous portraits of the Ned Kelly Gang. Equipped with not much more than a spontaneous attitude, we asked the locals to recommend us a few things to see / do and eat. The cottage had everything we needed for a comfortable and cosy two nights stay, my brother being a chef naturally wanted to cook the first night so we ate a home cooked meal and sat soft in front of the fireplace.
We spent the mornings next door at the neighbouring cafe, smashed a coffee / food and explored the forests and waterfalls in the area. We even snuck in a movie night with popcorn and snacks, and of course the film had to be "True History of the Kelly Gang" hah. A great stay for both of us, we would love to get back and do it all over again soon!

Things We Did
- Café
- Forest
- Brewery
- Waterfall
Right next door you will find the best brekky and coffee in town. The owner and staff are super friendly, we ended up going back the second day too.
The title says it all, we were recommended to this spot by a local. We really struggled at first to find it but eventually got there, it's pretty hidden.. but well worth it.
After a day of exploring we peeled back into the town super thirsty. We came across the local brewery Billsons for a beer / gin tasting paddles & snacks.
We checked out both Newton falls and Woolshed which were pumping thanks to all the rain we have had lately. Woolshed was our pick of the two if you can only check one.
