Sugar Beach & Sugar Babes
Adventure in South Ballina, North Coast, NSW, AU
Just a half hour south of our Byron home lies a magical place called Sugar Beach Ranch. We piled into the 4WD, caught the car ferry over the river, and stepped into our coastal Yellowstone dream.
The sound of crashing waves, cicadas, and the occasional whinny from a horse greeted us. Our colourful bungalow offered stunning views—ocean to one side, the pool straight ahead, and the horse paddocks on the other. We were in for a treat over the next few days. The bungalow was super comfy, featuring two separate bedrooms, each with its own kitchenette and ensuite. The beds could be arranged as kings or two singles, which was perfect for our group of four.
With the sunshine blazing down, we decided to hit the pool, armed with chilled wine and a tasty snack board. The pool area was a highlight—spacious, deep, and incredibly inviting. We spent hours chatting, swimming, bombing, diving, floating, and admiring the resident doves circling above us.
That evening, we grilled marinated chicken on the BBQ, whipped up some fresh salads, and wandered just a minute from the bungalow to a picnic table overlooking the ocean. A cozy fire crackled beside us, set up by our lovely hosts. With the perfect view of the sunset over the water, it was pure magic.
The next morning began with a delightful delivery from our amazing hosts: freshly baked, unbelievably delicious banana bread, farm-fresh eggs, and local honey. We savored our breakfast on the deck, coffee in hand. Later that day, I had an incredibly special equine therapy session with Maxime. We capped off the day with a walk along the beach, taking the horses into the waves for a sunset swim.
Our final morning featured scrumptious baked egg cups from Stevey and one last dip in the pool. Our stay at Sugar Beach Ranch was truly memorable and special, allowing us to connect with each other, with nature, and with these beautiful horses. We can't wait to come back again!

This equine therapy with Maxime was such a special experience. I spent an hour with Maxime and her three gorgeous male horses as we chatted about boundary setting and practiced techniques with the horses. Definitely worth booking a session during your stay. The paddocks for the sessions are just next to the cabin.

Stevey the host brought us fresh sand, coconut oil and essential oils so that we could make our own body scrub. We wandered down to the beach out front and mixed up our scented scrumptious scrub then sat in the shallows and gave ourselves a full body scrub. It was divine! We finished off with a swim to rinse everything off.
Just a minutes walk from the cabin is a picnic table over looking the ocean, with a fire pit and perfect sunset views. We took our dinner down and sat for hours.
Stevey offers an awesome experience of taking her horses for a beach walk onto the beach and into the water. It's called a meditation walk, and it was so much fun! Not sure how much meditating was going on but certainly loads of laughing!
There are two ways to get to Sugar Beach Ranch, and one of them is in the car ferry straight across the river from Ballina.
