Handcrafted Cottage made with Heart

On my way to Cranky Rock Cottage, I spotted some intriguing rock formations, and my curious nature got the better of me—I had to check them out! They were literally right by the side of the road. I climbed up the hill and explored for hours. The red and orange-hued rocks were home to various animals, and I couldn’t help but wonder what other life had thrived here before. It felt ancient.

Cranky Rock Cottage had that same vibe! It took a few kilometers into the wilderness to reach it, crossing Sweetmans Creek—of course, I kept my eyes peeled for any sweet men by the creek! Ha! I can’t say I spotted any, but the creek was indeed very sweet.

Arriving in the mid-afternoon, I found that the entire cottage was hand-built from different timbers milled on the property by the incredibly talented host, Lindsay. The craftsmanship was impressive, and you could tell it was made with a whole lot of love—my kind of humans, creating with heart!

The open-plan living, dining, and lounge area featured a cozy fireplace and large timber beams stretching from one side of the room to the other. There were two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a verandah nestled among the trees and a lush, free-growing garden. It reminded me of an old-school logger's cabin, complete with handmade bed frames, countertops, and reading nooks in every corner! The fireplace was set into a massive rock with plenty of character, hence the name “Cranky Rock” Cottage.

I enjoyed the hot tub among the grapevines before bed and settled in for an early night after a long day of travel.

I woke with the cicadas, as it was that time of year, and went for a walk around the property to the creek crossing. I whipped up a cooked breakfast featuring homemade jam, eggs, and damper—all provided by my hosts. By the way, the jam was spot on!

I took a little drive to the nearest town, Wollombi, which had a charming historic feel. I strolled along the township walk that really told its story. There was a tapas bar I was eager to try, but they were on holiday during my visit, so I added it to my future adventure list for next time. A few minutes down the road was a small town called Laguna, where I had lunch at the ‘Trading Post’ and sampled their homebrew!

I drove back to my cozy cabin, and of course, I indulged in a cheeky afternoon nap! I enjoyed the hot tub once again while birdwatching—all in the spirit of the great outdoors! It felt like spring on that summer night.

After showering off the day under fresh rainwater, I nestled into bed with my current read.

Rising with the sun, fresh as a daisy, I did yoga on the handmade verandah and gave thanks for such a blessing of a stay. I left with a warm heart that felt like it was seeping out of the walls and into me—like a warm hug that didn’t want to let you go. That’s exactly how it felt at Cranky Rock Cottage.

There's clear tracks from the Cottage to Sweetmans Creek. I enjoyed all the bird life along the way as well as all the wild flowers dancing the summer breeze.

Luguna, a little town so small that if you blinked, you'd miss it! And it's not one you wanna miss my friends! I stopped at the "Trading Post" for lunch as well as tried their home brew! I could have easily settled in for the arvo for a cheeky summer arvo sesh but I decided a take away freshly made juice would be wise. My Liver thanked me.
