Hillplains off-grid Luxury
Adventure in Metcalfe, Macedon Ranges, VIC, AU
Our family escape to Hillplains House and Cottage was everything we needed to slow down and reconnect. Nestled in the rolling countryside of Metcalfe, just 100 kilometres from Melbourne, this off-grid retreat offered a unique blend of luxury and sustainability. Surrounded by panoramic views of Mount Macedon and the Heathcote ranges, we found ourselves immersed in nature, with kangaroos as our curious neighbours and the serenity of the state forest as our backdrop.
The thoughtfully designed house and cottage, built with a striking mix of timber, steel, and polished concrete, reflected the agricultural roots of the area while offering warmth and comfort. Waking up to the soft light pouring through the windows, enjoying a morning coffee, and wandering through the richly textured gardens felt like a gentle reset—a reminder of the beauty in simplicity. The natural pool was a highlight, at a perfect 28 degrees, we enjoyed summer at its best. The private courtyards created a perfect space to unwind, free from the distractions of daily life, and a swing at a giant Gumtree was everything my daughter wanted in an escape.
We also ventured to Kyneton, a charming Victorian town just a short drive away, where we explored antique stores, indulged in incredible food at local cafes, and soaked in the town’s historic charm. Hillplains House and Cottage didn’t just provide us with a getaway; it gave us a chance to embrace slow living, disconnect from the noise, and reconnect with ourselves. It’s a place where time feels like it slows down, inviting you to breathe, explore, and create memories that linger long after you leave.

Kyneton is one of those towns in Australia that you can't believe exists until you put your foot on the charming streets and explore. Home of unique antique shops, slow living, heritage Australian houses and friendly neighbours, you will be impresses by this place's beauty.
The non-profit cafe in Kyneton you must visit for delicious food, great coffee and a spacious outdoor area to play with your kids while savouring amazing delicacies.
The property has a natural pool, solar-heated at a maximum of 28 degrees, providing a pleasant swimming experience. There is a lily pad and a reed garden on one side, creating a relaxing natural environment. The water is clean, and amazingly great and occasionally we found little snails around the edges, no frogs but you might find them. The host says these visitors are welcomed as it's a good testament to the water quality. The water is great for your skin and offers a refreshing way to start or end your day.
If you love a good treasure hunt for your home, this place is a must stop while travelling in the region! We found unique cabinets and art pieces and got entangled in the many rooms and tiny spaces of this Antique shop.
It is a classic cafe in Kyneton that you feel welcome any time of the year. I love a vintage style place, and the Little Swallow Cafe ticked all the boxes with amazing food, welcomed staff, good coffee and the style of the place and boosts history.
The hosts gently added a giant swing in the biggest Gumtree in the property, a fun do with your kids while overlooking the beautiful house, cabin and pool.
