Story by Blanka & John
Hilltop Stillness
Adventure in Modanville, North Coast, NSW, AU
After a scenic drive through rolling hills, we arrived at our tiny home in the late afternoon. Perched at the edge of the property, it offered breathtaking valley views, inviting us to pause in stillness. Beside the cabin, a small beehive housed Australian stingless bees. We watched them busily move in and out, reading fascinating facts on a nearby board. Inside, a cozy, cottage-like charm welcomed us. Thoughtful details—soft linen sheets, and a well-equipped kitchen—made our stay both luxurious and comforting. We couldn’t wait to sink into bed between the big, fluffy pillows.
In the morning, we stretched on the spacious deck as the first rays of sunshine warmed us. We followed with a Moka coffee ritual and a light breakfast, feeling energized and ready for the day. After some snuggles with the retreat’s resident horses, we set off on our first adventure. Whian Whian Falls, just a short walk from the road, offered easy access to a refreshing dip. John got his adrenaline fix by jumping from the top of the waterfall, while I enjoyed the cool rock pools.
Following our host’s recommendation, we discovered a hidden gem—Terania Creek by the Black Road. The meandering creek carves through the forest, and just after the bridge, it cascades into a lower-level pool, creating a small waterfall and a perfect spot for a swim. Hungry after our adventures, we stopped at The Channon Tavern, where, to our surprise, we found an extensive menu. The meals were delicious, and made with quality ingredients, and the old-time charm of the place transported us back in time.
Held every second Sunday of the month, The Channon Craft Market is a bohemian gathering where we wandered from stall to stall, discovering handmade treasures crafted by local artisans. After a day full of adventure, we indulged in the outdoor bath under a starry sky, sipping champagne and sharing stories about the journey that led us to this peaceful moment.
On our last morning, at our host’s recommendation, we stopped at Annie’s Country Bakery—and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed delicious pastries while sitting at their tables overlooking the breathtaking landscape. This escape gave us the time and space to deepen our connection, recharge our creativity, and fully immerse ourselves in nature.
