Unwind at Butterfly Lane
Adventure in Mullumbimby, North Coast, NSW, AU
We approached our accommodation along a dirt road, and as we emerged from beneath the tree canopies lining the way, the majestic Mount Chincogan unfolded before us, its pyramid shape coming into view from the front-row vantage point of our cabin.
Just as we arrived, a light drizzle began. We quickly curled up on the big sofa beds, hot tea in hand, and a good book—ready to unwind. Through the large panoramic windows of the tiny home, we had an unobstructed view of the majestic landscape, making us feel truly connected to the outdoors.
The next morning, we set out to explore Mullumbimby. We wandered down its charming streets, browsed vintage shops, and eventually landed at a local favorite recommended by our host.
Paseyo is a popular spot serving vibrant and flavorful vegan dishes. The dessert didn’t disappoint either, offering a perfect sweet ending to the meal. The afternoon arrived quickly, and we were eager for the highlight of our getaway.
Following our host’s guidance, we hiked up Mount Chincogan. As we made our way up, our host told us about the various trails leading to the summit, while also sharing fascinating facts about the land and its surroundings. The panoramic view from the top was breathtaking, and the experience was even more special, shared in good company. Tired but fulfilled, we lit the fire pit, took turns soaking in the outdoor bath, cooked a delicious meal, and eventually drifted off into a deep sleep in our cozy bed.
On our last morning, I enjoyed one final hot bath, flipping through a book. I paused at a passage that read: “Hygge (‘hue-gah’) is a quality of presence and an experience of belonging and togetherness. It is a feeling of being warm, safe, comforted, and sheltered.”
I looked up—nature stretched out before me, cows chewing in a companionable silence, the noble mountain standing watch over us, with the occasional kookaburra’s call and magpie song filling the air—and I thought: this is exactly how we felt while staying at Butterfly Lane.
Before heading home, we made one last stop to check off the final item on our bucket list. Goonengerry Falls is an ethereal waterfall overlooking a lush, green valley. A short trail led us to the top of the falls, where we cooled off in the cool rock pools—a perfect way to end our stay.
