All Aboard the Waterfront Carriage
Adventure in ECHUCA, Murray River, VIC, AU
I arrived just on sunset at this riverfront carriage retreat, fully on board for what turned out to be a delightFULL ride. The off-grid, eco stay was literally a train carriage from the 1920s, beautifully revamped into a cozy home complete with running rainwater, a flushing toilet, full-sized shower, spacious kitchen, two bedrooms, and air con—which was a blessing on the warmer nights. It was incredibly well put together, and still held onto its vintage charm in all the right ways. I was seriously impressed.
The humble abode faced a long, serene stretch of water framed by towering river gums. I noticed a hot tub tucked down by the water’s edge and decided to sink into that as the sun sank too. Later that evening, I lit the outdoor fire and made wishes on the shooting stars. The night was still—and for that moment, so was I. Peace was in the air, and in my heart.
I slept with the air con on, keeping the carriage at a perfect sleeping temp. I was super comfy—a carriage fit for a queen. The next morning, I yoga’d under the verandah before dragging the paddle board and kayak down to the water. I spent most of the morning out there, including a cheeky lunchtime dip, then cranked up the BBQ for a meal paired with a bevvy of choice. The afternoon drifted by with a book in hand and a sneaky nap in the carriage.
As sunset returned, I floated on the paddle board until the moon made her appearance. And then—because why the heck not when you're in such a private spot with Mother Nature—I went for a skinny dip. It was freeing and heart-filling all at once.
The next morning was easy and slow. I gave thanks to the trees and the carriage for keeping me safe, then enjoyed breakfast in the lounge. I left feeling completely rejuvenated and wholesome, and I truly hope to board that waterfront carriage again someday.
