Slow n Rusty

We arrived in Avenel just as the sun was setting on Friday evening, greeted warmly by our lovely hosts, Kevin and Dianne, and their spirited little dog, Bruce, who made his presence known right away. After settling in, we strolled down to the local pub for a relaxed dinner and a drink, then made our way back to the property.

With the fire crackling and a bottle of wine open, we spent the evening playing Scrabble, chatting, and truly switching off from the week. The stars were out, the air was crisp, and it felt so good to slow down.

Saturday began gently — coffee in hand, basking in the morning sun, and taking our time over breakfast. Later, we headed to Tahbilk Winery for their Secret Art of Wine Blending experience. It was hands-on, engaging, and gave us a new appreciation for the craft. Best of all, we each got to bottle our own custom blend to take home.

From there, we made our way to Fowles Winery for lunch. With delicious food, sweeping views, and a laid-back vibe, it was the kind of place you don’t want to leave. That afternoon, we relaxed by the firepit back at the property, soaking in the last of the day’s sun before heading back into town.

That night, the local pub was hosting a Fleetwood Mac tribute band — and it turned out to be a real highlight. Great music, a lively crowd, and that no-frills, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home.

Sunday morning was quiet and peaceful. We took a walk around Lake Nagambie, watching the sunrise and soaking in the stillness — one of those simple, grounding moments that lingers long after.

The weekend was the perfect blend of good wine, great company, and a chance to truly slow down. Avenel gave us just what we needed — and yes, we’re already missing Bruce.
