Bootmakers Cottage

Our family escape to Bootmakers Cottage in Birregurra felt like stepping back in time, but with all the comforts needed for a weekend of slow living. Nestled in a sunlit courtyard beneath vintage oak trees, the cottage’s wood-panelled walls and iron shower bath wrapped us in warmth, while the outdoor firepit set the stage for quiet reflection under the stars.

Birregurra may be small, but it’s full of charm. We began our days with fresh coffee and pastries, wandered quiet streets lined with historic buildings, and browsed local antique and design shops. There was something deeply satisfying about finding hidden treasures around every corner. Meandering along the Barwon River and poking through general stores, we felt wonderfully grounded—like we’d stumbled upon one of Victoria’s best-kept secrets.

Evenings were for connection: tabletop games with the family, laughter by the fire, soaking in the courtyard bathtub as the light faded, and swapping stories on the stage beneath a canopy of stars. We ended our stay with hearty pub meals and local wine, rounding out a weekend that reminded us the best escapes are often close to home—simple, beautiful, and full of genuine connection.

A local icon and the kind of spot that feels like a warm hug. Morning coffee, slow moments, and the perfect stop for Great Ocean Road explorers passing through.

The Grocer Café in Birregurra has that timeless charm — vintage details, big open spaces, and a warm country feel. We grabbed a spot inside due to the cold chills, sipped great coffee, and shared plates that felt homemade with a twist. It’s a little on the pricier side, especially on weekends, but with a great atmosphere.
