Slowing Down in Nature's Arms
Adventure in Yandoit Hills, Goldfields, VIC, AU
Life’s busy, and the thought of retreating to the hills was music to my soul.
I arrived in the late afternoon at an off-grid cabin perched high on the hill. The open-plan abode smelled of Australian natives and felt instantly warm and welcoming. The eco bathroom combined comfort with sustainability, featuring a full standing shower with hot running water and an odorless composting toilet. It was inspiring to see so many eco-friendly features operating without any electrical power.
Inside, a crackling wood fire, a comfy couch, and a full-sized kitchen with gas cooking—even an oven—made the space feel complete. Fresh farm eggs were waiting on the bench, and by heck, nothing tastes better than eggs that fresh.
Stepping out to the front deck, I breathed in the crisp country air. I was already at ease. At the edge of the cabin, an outdoor tub faced the native bushland. With the sun setting, I ran the bath—hot water flowing just as generously as my gratitude—and filled it to the top of my heart. I sank a little deeper into the evening as the horizon glowed, the sunset show all this earth angel needed.
That night, I slept soundly. The large bed was super comfy and comforting—no snuggle buddy required.
The next morning, I whipped up scrambled eggs laced with herbs from the garden that surrounded the retreat. Sunshine spilled through the front door as I wandered in and out, spending most of the morning roaming the property and getting lost in my own little wonderland. Nature feeds my soul. I discovered cool rocks, feathers, and something new about myself. Taking the time to just be felt like a gift. At the bottom of the property, I found a massive watering hole with kayaks basking in the sun. Yes please. Let’s paddle. And that’s exactly what I did.
As the day wound down, I returned to my sustainable hideaway just before sunset. The afternoon sun was warm and inviting. I sat in the lounge with the wood fire simmering and a cup of tea in hand, sliding the doors wide to hear the birds singing their song. I watched quietly as the sun left the day.
Packing up the next morning, I felt lighter, with clarity in my heart. Something about this place settles the spirit. It invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and live simply for a while. I’ll be back—but for now, I leave with a full heart and the kind of peace only nature can give.

Things We Did
- Kayak
- Wildlife
- Sunset
On the property, there's a large watering hole with Kayaks to go for a paddle.
The property is full of bush life and birds! I walked around the bushland all afternoon checking out cool rocks, birds and collecting feathers. You don't need to go far to see birds, I sat on the front deck with the binoculars watching the feathery friends come into me!
Prime sunset viewing spot submerged in water in the outdoor tub! Had the fire going too! Was pretty magical.
