The Hidden Heart of Carawirry Forest

Main Creek Cottage is nestled deep within the Carawirry Forest, north of Newcastle, NSW.

I didn’t waste any time getting my gear off, landing straight into the pool like any true water lover would. The cool water wrapped around me, instantly washing away the noise in my mind. I gazed out across the open land, admiring the soft mountain views in the distance. For the first time in what felt like forever, I was still, calm, and completely at ease in nature.

The cottage features an open kitchen, dining, and lounge area with super-high cabin ceilings — the kind of space you’d expect to see in a magazine. Warm sunlight poured through the windows, filling the room with a golden glow. The bathroom was bright and beautifully designed, with an insanely luxurious tub that became my second water retreat that evening. The moment I sank into the warm water, every muscle let go. Forest bathing at dusk is a must for anyone who wants to live life fully — and yep, I went there.

Two main bedrooms were plenty for me, though I noticed another space separate from the cottage called The Nook, offering even more rooms. I’ll have to bring a bunch of friends next time to share this little slice of paradise — there’s room for Tom, Dick, and Harry!

I slept better than any Sleeping Beauty that night and woke to “Skip,” the kangaroo, waiting patiently for his oats at breakfast. His gentle curiosity made me smile and filled my heart with simple joy.

The property is laced with walking trails and even boasts a private waterfall. I wandered through the forest, camera in hand, following the waterfall trail and feeling completely grounded. The tree canopy formed a cool, shaded path that smelled of earth and rain. When I reached the hidden swimming hole, I was thrilled — and yep, didn’t muck about here either, friends. I was in! The water was crisp and clear; I could see my toes brushing the smooth rocks below. Lying on my back, floating gently, I watched the leaves dance in the light above me. The moment felt magical and freeing, as if time had stopped — and I fell in love.

I climbed a few trees (and fell out of one, ha!). Laughing out loud, I felt playful and grateful to have landed on my feet. I added a few stones to the little rock tower on the bank, claiming the spot as my own peaceful oasis for the day. Barefooting my way back, I felt the cool energy of the earth beneath me and a deep sense of connection with everything around. My heart was full and my mind clear.

Back at the cottage, I took a long, hot shower and watched the sun melt into the evening sky, painting everything in shades of orange and pink. As it set, so did I — lighting the outdoor campfire and making wishes upon the shooting stars streaking across the sky. The night air felt soft against my skin, and I was filled with quiet gratitude.

Bed was calling my name, so I followed it straight into dreamland — snuggled up, cosy, and content.

The next morning, I said goodbye to Skip and gave thanks to the cottage for keeping me safe and warm during my stay. Taking three deep breaths, I tuned into that calm, grounded state within me, hoping it would linger as I carried these memories forward.

What a beautiful time to be alive.

I landed one clear night and I took up this moment next to the camp fire under the stars. Do you wish upon a shooting star?

I could not believe my eye balls when I seen this private waterfall spot! Accessible and beautiful forest walk to this incredible location. The waterfall wasn't flowing much during my visit although I still went for a swim and climbed some trees. Fell out of a tree too! ha!
