Watching Brumbies from the Hot Tub

There's a little girl within me that grew up dreaming of Brumbies. As a child my imaginary play revolved around tales of snow-clad mountains and chasing wild horses through the snow gums. My best friend Megan and I would run around the bush until sundown, recreating the magic and the myth of Banjo Patterson and Elyne Mitchell's famous words, stories that brought to life the spirit of horsemanship and the beauty of our high country...

Needless to say, when real-life brumbies slowly wandered into my sight, just metres from the verandah of Shiki Shed, I cried. Not one or two but a whole dozen of them with a frisky new foal, so at peace and at home on their regular visit to the 'Shiki Stayz' property. My childhood memories came flooding home to me.

On a gently sloping hill in Cobungra, the Shiki Shed overlooks cleared pasture that seamlessly meets the surrounding bushland and mountain ranges. We had just stepped out of the bubbling outdoor hot tub when the wild horses blessed us with their presence. That night, drifting off to sleep in the luxurious king bed I imagined these beautiful creatures galloping across the ridgeline of nearby Mount Feathertop and grazing beside the cattlemen's huts.

The next morning, after a hearty breakfast cooked in the beautifully-restored shed's full kitchen, we cruised 'up top' to Hotham, just a short drive from our stay. In my humble opinion, some of the country's best views surrounded us, inviting us for a Spring hike or some mountain biking, along with the encouragement to return in winter for snowboarding or skiing. Adventure opportunities aside, we were soon being called to return to our beautiful stay, where we could watch the stars come into view from the cosy leather couch by the fire and cuddle up with our dog who was so lucky to be welcomed here too.

If the mountains are calling you too, Shiki is where it's at. Just go!

Every few days the wild horses wander through the property of Shiki Stayz. You might be quietly taking in the sunset when they pass through for their need on the fresh grass in the pasture below your stay.
