A Quiet Stay Between Land & Sea

Some places ask nothing of you except to arrive and breathe, and this humble abode felt exactly like that. I arrived as the light began to soften and the paddocks stretched out in front of me, holding that quiet end of day stillness. From the outside the train carriage was full of curiosity, but stepping inside shifted everything. One open space, thoughtfully converted, with naturally shaped timber benches and original carriage details woven gently throughout. Every part of it felt intentional, created with care and love.

The lighting inside was low and moody, wrapping the space in warmth. It felt inviting and calm, as though the world had slowed down just for this moment. The bed looked deeply comfortable and promised a good night’s rest the moment I set my bag down. An eco toilet and simple shower space sat quietly within the design, allowing the stay to remain connected to the land around it. Outside, the deck opened to paddock views that seemed to stretch on forever. The air carried the fresh scent of mint drifting up from the garden and it grounded me instantly. I cooked on the BBQ as the sky softened into evening, then sat listening to the land settle as daylight faded.

Morning arrived gently. Light filtered through the carriage and I woke feeling rested and present. With a warm drink in hand, I watched the ducks go about their day at the pond, completely absorbed in their own rhythm. Sheep moved slowly across the open paddock, and later a cheeky fox appeared briefly before disappearing back into the grass.

One day took me further afield with a drive along the Great Ocean Road. The ocean air rushed in through open windows and the journey felt expansive and free. At low tide I explored beach caves shaped by time and water, then slipped into the sea. It was just me, not another human in sight. Floating there, I felt held by the vastness of the ocean and completely at peace.

Back at the carriage, I wandered through the food forest behind my stay and picked ripe raspberries straight from the vine, sweet and sun warmed. I spent hours stretched out in the hammock, daydreaming and watching the clouds drift slowly overhead. I wondered if the carriage, which would have been moving for most of its working life, was sending me a message to finally sit still, as time felt generous here. Evenings returned me to the warmth inside the carriage. Soft light. Quiet comfort. Deep rest. The kind of place that allows you to fully exhale.

When it was time to leave, I noticed how different I felt. Relaxed. Content. Slowed in the best way. I carried with me the scent of mint, the memory of wide paddocks, and the feeling of being truly present in a place made with heart.

Childers Cove is such a beautiful beach to swim and explore at. It's part of the Great Ocean Rd although its out of way. So most of the time you can get the entire beach to yourself like me! Low tide you can explore into the caves too!
