Perfect Farm Escape

Tucked into the folds of the Macedon Ranges, Fellcroft Farmstay had been on our list for a while — and from the moment we arrived, we knew this two-night escape was going to be something special.

Veronica greeted us with the kind of warmth that instantly put us at ease. A retired nurse from a farming family that's worked this land since 1862, she gave us a thorough walk-through of Wren, our quarters for the stay, before leaving us to settle in with a welcome of local wine and cheese. The skies stayed soft and cloudy for most of our stay — no harsh sun, no rain, just gentle grey light that made the hills around us feel even more peaceful. We did catch glimpses of sunrise and sunset breaking through over the ranges, and those brief moments of colour against the hills were some of the most memorable of the trip.

The farmhouse itself surprised us at every turn. What looks like a simple, beautiful farm stay from the outside opens into something far more considered inside — a spacious lounge with lovely lighting, a kitchenette generously stocked with complimentary food, and one detail that stopped us in our tracks: an old farm storage cabinet, once used for meat and supplies, cleverly repurposed into a TV cabinet behind its original netted door. It's the kind of thoughtful touch that tells you this place was built with real care.

But the bathroom was the showstopper. A jacuzzi bathtub with heated flooring — something neither of us had experienced before, and genuinely hard to find anywhere — looked straight out over grazing sheep and rolling hills. We spent one evening just soaking in that view, and it's stayed with us since.

What struck us most, though, was just how much value came with it all. Fellcroft felt genuinely reasonable for the level of comfort on offer — wine on arrival, a breakfast hamper with farm-fresh eggs, butter, milk, tea and coffee, and little touches you don't expect at this kind of price point. A heated bathroom floor alone is something we've rarely found even at nature stays well above this range. It's rare to feel this looked after without the price tag to match.

With the weather too foggy and windy for the climb up Hanging Rock, we changed plans and explored closer to home instead. A short drive took us to Macedon Regional Park, where we stood at the Mount Macedon Memorial Cross and took in the sweeping views from Major Mitchell Lookout. Just five minutes further, we found the quiet stillness of Sanatorium Lake, before warming up with coffee at the cosy Oak & Stone café — a perfect stop on a cool, cloudy day.

Back at the farm, our favourite ritual became sitting outside with a coffee at golden hour, listening to birdsong and the distant sound of sheep grazing. It's simple, it's slow, and it's exactly the kind of moment Fellcroft is built for. Veronica and her family are genuine farmers wanting to share the love and peace this land has to offer — and even on the quieter, tougher days, their doors and hearts stay open to whoever comes through. Looking back on the stay now, what stays with us most is how genuinely premium it felt — not in a flashy way, but in every quiet, considered detail, at a price that made it all the more special. A truly premium farm stay retreat, and one we won't forget anytime soon.
