Salt Air & Slow Days
Adventure in Auckland, NZ
Tuis warble by day, Ruru call out by night, and the ever-present crash of the ocean waves plays like a soothing background track to it all.
Welcome to the soundtrack of Bethells Cottages - perched on the hill overlooking Te Henga/Bethells Beach, with black sand stretching for miles towards the opposing cliffs and islands sitting amongst the relentless ocean surge. It is all just a short distance from central Auckland, yet a million miles away at the same time.
The view from the cosy Turehu cottage is unparalleled - with an expanse of grass stretching out before you before dropping to the tussocks below; it’s the perfect spot to lay back in the sun, read a book, have a drink, relax, and just soak it all in.
I spent my days doing just that, as well as drawing in the conservatory on the provided easel, reading in the nook, observing and petting the resident cats, relaxing in the shared cedar hot tub, and watching the pheasants and quail wander the cottage gardens that were bursting with colour.
But of course there’s also the surrounding areas just aching to be explored. I visited the Bethells Beach Cafe every day for a milkshake and some of their delicious kai (food) and was lucky enough to be there for a band evening, and a daytime festival. There is of course the beach - and if you’re a keen surfer you would be in heaven with the waves. If not, it’s the perfect place for a stroll where you can cool off in the calmer waters, or wander the length of the beach to the incredible sea caves (be careful of the tides though). I even visited the quaint Bethells Farm Shop and Cafe for some local produce and delicious cake, as well as plenty of unique hand-made trinkets and gifts.
Sitting out there watching the locals and their sense of community, the relaxed easy-going vibe and the genuine chilled atmosphere made it all the more difficult to pack up my things and say goodbye, but with other cottage options I will be sure to return and escape again.

There is nothing quite like the wild raw nature of a NZ west coach beach - watching in awe at the power of the waves as they crash on the shore, searching for new beautiful patterns in the unique black sand, hunting for sea shells, paddling in the shallows of the inlet, or watching the sun set against the ocean's horizon - you'll never experience the same day twice.
The uninterrupted views of the night sky along the west coast of Aotearoa are unparalleled - just wait for darkness to set in, then gaze up as the milky way starts to make its appearance...
Ever seen a black sand, sand dune? Well you can at Bethells Beach! The black sand dunes are a short walk, and a lot of fun - bring something to slide on!
The sea caves at Te Henga / Bethells Beach are a sight to behold. After a long walk along the black sand beach (to either the north or south end) you will find the sea caves - I went to the southern caves. Be sure to time your visit well with the tides, as you definitely don't want to get caught out! As you approach the cave seems somewhat small, but the closer you get, the more you realise the absolute scale of both the cliffs and the cave. Incredible natural colours paint the stone, swallows dip in and out, and it is eerily but beautifully quiet and cool inside. Definitely a must-do in the area.
Bethells Beach is more than just a cafe - it's a whole vibe. Think; sitting in the sun, listening to chill tunes, eating very delicious kai (food), while locals and tourists alike mingle and chat, horses trot by, dogs sit in the shade, and everyone is just...enjoying life. I was lucky enough to be there for an evening with a very cool band, as well as an annual festival!
The sunsets on the west coast are unforgettable - on a good day, the sky looks as though it is aflame with colour, as the sun burns into the horizon.
The Bethells Farm Shop is a lovingly quaint farm shop full to the brim with local produce, beautiful crafts, and excellent cake and coffee. Open on Saturdays - it is definitely worth a look!
Relax in the cedar hot tub, surrounded by beautiful gardens, while gazing out at the incredible view over Te Henga / Bethells Beach
