Golden Countryside Escape
Adventure in Wooragee, High Country, VIC, AU
Golden evenings, starlit nights and sunrise from bed, the farm escape we didn’t want to leave.
The road wound through granite country and open green paddocks before The Eastern Tiny finally came into view. Inspired by traditional shearers' quarters, the little cabin sits quietly above a spring-fed pond, with majestic hills rising in the distance and greenery all around. Horses and cows grazed nearby, birdsong filled the air, and we both went quiet for a moment, just taking it in. We've stayed in so many tiny houses, but this one instantly felt like a combination of everything we love.
Inside, everything had been thoughtfully designed: a fully equipped kitchen, complimentary tea, coffee, jam and butter, and a cosy indoor fireplace for the cooler hours. We made a cuppa, sat out front looking over the pond, and let the slow rhythm of farm life settle in.
As the afternoon faded, the sun set beautifully beside the cabin, washing the paddocks in soft gold. After dinner, we wandered a few steps over to the outdoor fire pit, lit it up, and watched the sky slowly fill with stars. With no city glow out here, there were more than we could count, and we even spotted a few satellites gliding across. No phones, no noise, just the crackle of the fire and the two of us. We ended the night with a soak in the outdoor bathtub, tucked right beside the bedroom window, under that same starry sky.
The next morning, we didn't even need to leave the bed for the best view in the house. We caught the moon and the last of the stars before dawn, then watched soft eastern light spill over the hills and across the paddocks, straight through the bedside window. It was one of those quiet, magical moments that stays with you long after the trip.
After a slow breakfast, we took the short drive into historic Beechworth. We wandered its gold-rush streetscapes, tasted our way through the Beechworth Honey Shop, and strolled the shores of Lake Sambell. In the afternoon, we went searching for wilder corners: the rushing cascades of Woolshed Falls, then the short uphill climb to Mount Pilot Lookout, where the whole countryside opened up around us in every direction.
That last evening, we let the farm set the pace one final time, with nowhere to be and nothing to rush. By our final morning, it was hard to say goodbye to a place that had made slowing down feel so easy.
Sophie and Tom are wonderful hosts, warm, friendly and genuinely caring, and you can feel the love and effort they’ve poured into every detail. We left feeling rested, grounded and properly reconnected, with each other and with the simple joy of country life. If you’re craving slow mornings, starry nights and the gentle rhythm of the farm, The Eastern Tiny is waiting for you.
