Hinterland Escape
Adventure in Mullumbimby, North Coast, NSW, AU
The countdown was on. Those Friday feelings had sunk in, and we were ready to escape bustling Byron Bay and head to our hinterland escape for the weekend, just in time for sundown. As we walked through the doors of our home for the weekend, we felt as if we had stepped back in time. The barn is built with timber and is filled with touches of antique furniture, giving it a rustic, historic and homely feel. We were greeted with an incredible view and the perfect deck to share our bottle of red. We watched as the sun said its farewells for another day. We lit up a fire as the stars lit up the sky in sync, as we buzzed over our planned adventures for the next few days.
The barn is nestled on the banks of the calming Brunswick River, and a stone's throw from the quirky town of Mullumbimby along with the nearby Nightcap National Park. We knew we were in for a weekend mixed with good coffee, nature and epic adventures. We started the morning slow, coffee paired with a view can be time-consuming! As the morning sun made its way over the gum trees surrounding the property, it was the perfect time for the outdoor shower, which made for a peaceful wake up. We filled up on the local eggs provided by our kind hosts and took a wander across the road to the local markets and into town, we refuelled with caffeine, and we were ready to kickstart our day.
We made our way into the depths of Nightcap National Park with the road surrounded by towering gums and wallabies at every turn. As we arrived at the top of Minyon Falls overlooking the valley below, we followed the path running alongside the mountain stream and made our way to the base to experience the power of the falls. After an adventure filled morning we headed back to Mullum to the local brewery in town to sample a few beers. We grabbed a couple of take-aways of our favourites and strolled back to the barn to reflect on the epic day we had as the sky changed colour through our window. We woke fresh after another perfect night around the fire pit. Our morning coffee was shared with the local horse on the property this morning, what a treat. The perfect day to explore the nearby beaches of Brunswick Heads and to try our luck fishing in the Brunswick River.
It was hard to leave the barn after such a special stay. It had everything we needed to unwind and relax in its rural setting as well as close to so many pristine waterfalls, beaches along with an endless choice of local cafes and markets. We left feeling reconnected with nature and ready to plan the next adventure.

Things We Did
- Hike
- Brewery
- Fish
- Beach
- Town

Minyon Falls is a 200m drop watefall nestled in the valley of Nightcap National Park. This is the start of multiple walking tracks but we chose to hike to the base and were rewarded with the power of the roaring falls right in front of us!
Local brewed beers in an industrial setting. We loved the tasting paddles but our favourite was the XPA. Sink a few as the sun goes down!

Fishing in the crystal clear and calm waters of the Bruns River at sundown is a must do!

Beach hopping in Bruns is special because no beach is quite the same. Explore the surf at Brunswick Heads beach or snorkel the calm waters of Torakina. There's something for everyone.

Wander the streets and discover the endless coffee shops and quirky characters of Mullumbimby. Our favourite for a caffeine hit was 'Bimbi'
