Country Camping in Bungabee Springs
Adventure in Bentley, North Coast, NSW, AU
This country camping location provides a fun, fresh air experience for all types of campers. With sites for 4wd owners as well as 2wd, you have options around the 90-acre property of bushland, subtropical forest and creek flats.
Located less than a 2-hour drive from Byron Bay, Bungabee Springs has plenty to offer in its quiet, secluded and scenic surroundings. Warmly welcomed by the hosts Katrina & Kane, we were pointed in the directions of the available sites on the property.
After Kane finished telling us about the 1,800 acres of state forest backing onto their property and the nearly endless 4x4 tracks that twisted and turned throughout, we headed through the gate to set up camp. We decided to go with Gumtree Gully Camp as it was protected from the wind and provided a feeling of isolation.
While unrolling our awnings and putting our camp chairs out, we couldn't help but notice the 20 or so massive gumtrees which had obviously helped in naming the campsite. Eager to see what this campground had to offer, we jumped in one of our cars and headed up to the lookout. Kane mentioned we most definitely needed to see the sunset from up there during our stay. A very short drive up over the hill, and we were greeted with amazing skies and beautiful colours amongst mountain valley views. We watched the sun go down at Lookout Camp with a few beers - You also have the option to camp up here too!
The next morning we set off to explore the 4x4 tracks out the back of the property. Not having done much 4x4 driving in the past, we took our time and often took the easy option. We definitely need to come back and tackle some of the more challenging sections; there are also plenty of mountain bike tracks.
Content with the effort we had put in on the trails, we headed back to camp. With still light left in the day, we went for a small bush-walk around the property. By the time we had finished our walk, the sun had started to set, and we couldn't help but drive back up to the lookout to end our day off. This time we were sharing the view with a group of kangaroos which topped off our afternoon.

Things We Did
- 4WD
- Sunset
- Bike
As a moderate level of difficulty, there is plenty of mud, climbs and off-road fun to be had. Located pretty well next-door to the camping location, the property backs onto loads of 4wd tracks.
Catch a crazy sunset at the top of the property, with options to camp up here too! Kangaroos about, we spent 2 hours watching the sun go down, it was that nice.

As we weren't Mountain bike riders ourselves, it was obvious that there were plenty of good tracks around the property; wooden ramps, windy trails, hops and jumps for all levels of riders. Also very easily accessible from the campsite being next door.
