Sandy Toes & Salty Air
Adventure in Aireys Inlet, Great Ocean Road, VIC, AU
Apologies - this property is not suitable for small children
The excitement about our long weekend adventure in Airey's was next level; perhaps all the time in lockdown we'd endured made this first getaway all the sweeter!
After months away from the ocean, I felt like my heart would explode as we arrived at the coast and got that first glimpse of the swell. We stepped out of the car to breathe in that salty air and take in the setting sun. Hearing the waves crash that night as our heads hit the pillows in the gorgeous loft room of our nautical cottage was exactly what we'd been longing for.
Waking well-rested the next day, we decided to suss out our surroundings, discovering a beautiful boardwalk just a stone's throw from our stay. From here we could spot a myriad of birdlife amidst the wetlands. Walking a little further we found a great cafe, a surf shop and a book store for some post-lockdown retail therapy.
With so much to see in the area, we filled our days exploring the five beautiful local beaches, swimming in the ocean and driving along the Great Ocean Road with no real destination in mind.
Our nights were spent retreating back to our accommodation for a bubbling spa bath and a wine by the gas log fire.
Bohdan, our friendly host, had his cottage beside the Great Ocean Road, decked out with all we needed. We loved the staircase beneath the sail in the loft and the balcony straight off the bedroom which became our little spot to gaze at skies full of stars. In the mornings we'd cook crepes and relish in family time around the big table or outside on the spacious sunkissed deck. Snuggling on the couch while our little one napped meant we were relaxed and refreshed each afternoon before the beach called our names again and we'd wander back to the waves......

Things We Did
- Beach
- Food & Drink
- Lookout
- Walk
Everyone knows the Twelve Apostles, but few seek to view them from sea-level. It was always on my bucket list to wander down the Gibson Steps at sun down and marvel at these huge cliffs from below. We threw out the picnic blanket, cracked open some cold drinks and watched the scene change colour as day turned to night....
