Couple's retreat at Sawmill Mountain

Nestled in amongst the bushes, you’ll find Sawmill Mountain Retreat - an architecturally designed cottage retreat at the base of Mt Buller. If you are passionate about sustainable architecture and tourism, or you're someone who craves to be near waterfalls and rugged mountains, then you have stumbled upon the right place. During our trip, we visited the quaint town of Yea, the small village of Bonnie Doon, Mt Buller's Summit, Mirimbah's tranquil Delatite River, hiked the Plain Creek Track and visited the homely Merrijig Motor Inn.

We first began our travels by departing from Melbourne, and stopping off at the small, quaint town of Yea, approximately 100km from Melbourne’s city centre. After a few hours drive, we were definitely keen for a pick-me-up, and so we grabbed a couple of delicious pies from The Provender Country Bakehouse for fuel. They certainly didn’t disappoint. If you have time, check out St Lukes Op Shop, where you will find old-world ceramics, second-hand clothes and charming books just a few doors up from Provender Bakehouse. Now, time to get back in the car. Roughly 45 minutes away from Yea, you will drive through the small village of Bonnie Doon and pass Brankeet Inlet (the Australian comedy film The Castle was filmed here in 1997!). Be sure to check this out, or even to go for a jet ski or fish (and if you are lucky enough to own a jet ski).

Finally! After 40 more minutes of driving, we arrived at the Sawmill Mountain Retreat in Sawmill Settlement. The property is a wood lover's dream - you’ll notice recycled timber floors, recycled decking and of course, a fantastic fireplace with plenty of wood under the deck (you’ll see!) We took the first day to relax and settle into the tranquil retreat and have a few cold beverages and sausages before we geared up for the days ahead.

We started our day by driving up to the tipity-top of Mt Buller’s Summit with our bikes. This is the tallest peak of Mt Buller, reaching 1805m above sea level, where you will be graced with awe by Mt Buller’s vastness and beauty.

Of course, the fun had just begun. We walked down to the base of Mt Buller’s Village, and cycled back down the entirety of the mountain. We recommend you drive up, unless you are an extremely athletic individual who is willing to cycle up the mountain! Make sure to bring someone who can drive your vehicle back down and meet you at the base of Mt Buller. We cycled down the main road at a rapid speed, with an elevation loss of 220m. After an exhilarating ride down the mountain, we were all very sweaty and were craving a refreshing swim.

At the base of Mount Buller, you’ll find Mirimbah’s Delatite River: a picturesque river stream of glistening pebbles and lush vegetation. We brought our bathers and had a swim in the gorgeous river to cool off after our bike ride. Highly recommend! After a big day out in the sun, we decided to stay home and play scrabble and articulate with a glass of wine (or two).

Starting from the base of Carter’s Mill Day Reserve, you will begin your hike up Mount Buller's Plain Creek Track. The track has gentle hills and a few rocky obstacles, but perfect for the beginner to the intermediate hiker. If you hike to the top, about 2.5km from the base, you will see one of Mt Buller’s many waterfalls. The waterfall will meet you with a refreshing spray. *Note: This waterfall cannot be swum in, as the hike concludes at the top of the falls, approximately 1km above sea level.

We highly recommend you conclude your day by visiting the Merrijig Motor Inn - a family-friendly restaurant and hotel with a sweet stretch of garden, approximately 20 minutes from Mt Buller. The staff are lovely, and incredibly well informed about gin, so make sure you try a gin and tonic. We were lucky enough to dine there on BBQ night, where you will be able to tuck into delicious jacket potatoes, garlic prawns, vegetable skewers and tasty mixed salads.
