Slow Burn Sunsets
Adventure in Bombira, Country NSW, NSW, AU
There is something to be said for the way in which time seems to slow down in the Central West. Everything just moves a little more slowly, with a little more thought, a little more care. As you venture from Sydney, through and over the Blue Mountains and through the rolling hills of the sleepy towns that greet you, you can't help but feel rejuvenated. Arriving in Mudgee on a summers-evening, with your worries in the rear-view, there is a good chance that you will be greeted by a sunset that only the Central West and places like it can provide. Unobstructed by buildings and coloured by a bright pastel palette, it calls for you to relax by the fire and to bask in its slow-burning glow.
Shawwood Cottage, only a stone's throw from Mudgee town, and nestled amongst some of the regions best wineries, is the perfect base for your adventures, be it over a weekend or for longer. The cottage itself is set on what was once a thriving winery, and if you take the time to explore around, you will find remnants of the winery surrounding you.
The cottage is amazingly well-equipped, with two large bedrooms that comfortably fit a family, a warm fireplace in the main living area, and even a TV room for the kids to escape to. Outside, you have a large dining area with multiple vantage points to sit and relax. Take a walk up the hill and enjoy the sunset as you roast marshmallows over the outdoor fire pit. Or take the kids to feed the horses, who are friendly and eager to say hello.
And, of course, Mudgee has plenty to offer for adventurers and the less-so-inclined. You can't go past the wineries, with some of the countries best reds on offer. Keen on something more adventurous? Take a drive out to "The Drip", a revered natural swimming spot set amongst a canyon on the outskirts of town. Finish the day with a meal at one of Mudgee's many fabulous restaurants, pubs or bars.

The Drip is well known amongst locals as being a fantastic, natural swimming hole to cool off in on warmer days. Take the easy walk along the well-maintained track for about 1.5km until you reach the end of the track. Here you will be greeted by a number of natural swimming pools just waiting for you to bathe in.
One of Mudgee (and Australia's) top wineries, Lowe Family Wine Co is a great spot if you want to taste some fine wines, whilst also being family-friendly. Not only do they have a fantastic outdoor space for you to enjoy, but the kids will love visiting the animals on the animal walk, including horses, emus and more.
Be sure to arrive before sunset, grab some carrots to feed the horses, and some marshmallows for the fire. Walk up the hill to the open field and enjoy a fire as you watch an amazing Central West sunset
