Muckleford Forest Cottage - Quiet bush stay with dam, pizza oven & wood fire

Muckleford Forest Cottage is a cosy mudbrick stay designed for slow days close to nature. Set on 20 peaceful off-grid acres beside a beautiful dam on the edge of Muckleford Forest, it offers a quiet and comfortable base for couples, small families or friends looking to unwind, explore and enjoy the outdoors. Just 12 minutes from Castlemaine, it feels peaceful and away from it all while still being close to great coffee, galleries, markets, shops and supplies.

Life here flows easily between the cottage and the outdoors. Spend your days by the water, fire up the woodfired pizza oven, toast marshmallows by the firepit, or challenge each other to a game of tennis. With birdlife, kangaroos and surrounding bushland, it’s a place to slow down, reconnect and enjoy the simple pleasures of a country escape.

Inside, the cottage has warm textured walls, timber ceilings and leadlight windows, with an open-plan living and kitchen space that feels simple, character-filled and relaxing. There is a leather couch, comfy chair, dining table, books, games, a Bluetooth speaker and a guitar. There is no TV by design, inviting a slower pace and more connection, though Wi-Fi is available. In cooler months, the wood heater keeps the cottage cosy, with firewood provided.

The bedroom has a queen bed and a double bed in the same room, both with comfortable latex mattresses, quality bedding and a choice of pillows. When only one bed is needed, the double is prepared as a daybed for reading, stretching out or an afternoon nap. As both beds are in the one bedroom, the cottage is best suited to couples, small families or friends comfortable sharing the same sleeping space.

The kitchen is small but well equipped for easy holiday cooking, with a gas stove and oven, toaster, electric grill, bar fridge with freezer compartment, Nutribullet blender and a Breville Nespresso Creatista Plus with milk wand. A selection of Nespresso pods, locally roasted ground coffee, tea, full cream milk and basic pantry essentials are provided, along with a French press and moka pot for slower mornings.

The bathroom is basic but clean, with a step-in shower, toilet and hand basin. Towels and basic toiletries are provided.

Outside, the verandah and entertaining area include outdoor seating, a large picnic table, hammock, gas BBQ with wok burner and the woodfired pizza oven, prepared before your arrival and ready to light. Down by the dam you’ll find relaxing chairs, another picnic table and a firepit for evenings under the stars. A kayak and small rowboat with paddles are available for exploring the dam, and life jackets can be provided on request.

There is also a bush-style tennis and basketball area with basic equipment provided. Walking tracks begin straight from the property, with shorter loops as well as longer walks to places including the Red White and Blue Goldmine and Muckleford Nature Reserve. If you’d like local recommendations, I’m always happy to share favourite walks, viewpoints, cafes, markets, live music and other things to do in the area.

The property is alive with nature. From the cottage and garden you’ll often spot a wide variety of birds, hear frogs, and see regular kangaroo visits. If you’re lucky, you may also come across wallabies, echidnas, sugar gliders or phascogales, and it’s not uncommon to wake to the sound of laughing kookaburras.

We live on the property, but the cottage has its own private outdoor area and access to the dam and surrounding spaces. Our home is nearby, separated by gardens and trees, so the cottage feels peaceful and private. I usually greet guests on arrival, share a few local tips and, if needed, a few pointers for getting the best out of the pizza oven. After that, we leave guests to enjoy their stay in peace and are available if needed.

Being off-grid is part of the charm and slower rhythm of the place. The cottage is comfortably set up for everyday use, including lighting, Wi-Fi, kitchen appliances and normal device charging. We do ask guests to use water thoughtfully, and EV charging is not available at the cottage.

Dogs are welcome. They’re welcome inside, but not in the bedroom or on furniture. Please bring your dog’s bedding, and make sure dogs are clean and dry before coming indoors. An XL crate can be provided on request, and a dog bowl and dog towel are supplied. There is a large fenced house-yard area, though small dogs or determined escape artists may still get through gaps in the fencing. Dogs may only be left unattended by prior arrangement.

This is a stay for guests who value nature, outdoor living and the simple comfort of a quiet country escape.

Please don’t use water to put the fire out.

Beautiful, quiet and peaceful stay. The pizza oven was an absolute bonus, and we loved that it was dog friendly so our doggos could enjoy the getaway with us too. Thank you for having us!

I’m originally from the Netherlands and moved to Australia in 2009 with my wife. We traded a fast-paced professional life for a slower, more intentional lifestyle and now love spending our time close to nature, exploring new places through road trips, camping and travel, and creating thoughtful, character-filled spaces. I’m especially drawn to natural homes, off-grid living and tiny houses. As a host, I enjoy welcoming guests, sharing local recommendations, and then giving them the space, privacy and quiet to truly unwind. Muckleford Forest Cottage is a place I’m proud to share — simple, peaceful and surrounded by the beauty of this corner of Central Victoria.

On route to Maldon we timed an encounter with the steam train as it chugged across a historic bridge in Walden.

A Day Of Discoveries At The Mill Castlemaine

If you think you know Castlemaine, wait until you step inside The Mill — a reimagined 1870s woollen factory that’s become a treasure trove of creativity, craftsmanship, and community.
We spent an entire afternoon here — and honestly, we could have stayed all day.

It’s one of those places where the unexpected happens around every corner. One minute you’re sipping espresso in a European-style coffeehouse, the next you’re watching a chocolatier temper glossy slabs of handmade goodness or sampling award-winning local wine just steps away from a craft brewery.
We wandered through the vintage precinct (aka heaven for anyone who loves pre-loved, quirky and retro gems), and stumbled upon a florist who only works with ethically sourced blooms. Around the corner, a mosaic artist was mid-project in a sunlit studio while next door someone was handcrafting woollen clothing.

There’s a rhythm to The Mill, it’s bustling but not rushed, creative yet relaxed. It’s where locals meet for Pilates or grab sourdough from the baker who’s been up since dawn. Where small businesses work out of repurposed offices and artisans welcome you right into their process.

What stood out the most was the sense of community. It's not just a market or a collective, it’s a living, breathing hub of people doing what they love, and doing it really well.

Whether you're hunting for vintage finds, craving an indulgent treat, curious about handmade everything, or just after a really good reason to explore, The Mill Castlemaine delivers something for every kind of wanderer.

Bring your curiosity and maybe a basket. You’ll want to take a few things home.

Brunch In Tortoise Espresso

From the outside, it’s easy to miss. Just a small window tucked under a small town with a few stools scattered on the footpath. But the moment we joined the short queue, we could tell this place was something special. The smell of fresh coffee, the quiet hum of conversation, and a tray of perfect pastries set the tone.

We’re no coffee experts, but the staff was super friendly and helped guide us through the long list of single origin beans—from Panama to Colombia and Guatemala. we ended up with a cup made from Brazil & Colombia beans, and it was smooth, fruity, and honestly one of the best coffees I’ve ever had. My wife tried one of the filter coffees from Indonesia which tasted amazing.

To top it off, we had the most incredible tuna melt—crispy, cheesy, full of flavour—and a salmon bagel that was fresh, creamy, and perfectly balanced. Simple food, done exceptionally well.
Tortoise Espresso might be small, but the passion and quality packed into that little window is huge. It’s the kind of place you wish you could take home with you.
