A tree-top escape on a permaculture farm that’s a living, breathing and hope-fuelling example of closed-loop living.

So many tiny houses are mass produced. This is a truly unique, stunningly crafted off-grid building set on a completely private site at the top of a permaculture farm. The king loft bed floats in the forest canopy, surrounded by a native garden, a fire space dug into the earth like a 70s conversation pit, and your own private outdoor bath for soaking under the stars.

Additional Information

For the adventurous, design-loving, dog-having, nature enthusiasts, welcome to a tiny house that I hope has a profound impact. Every aspect of both the house and its surrounds has been designed to demonstrate the awe-inspiring opportunities we have to turn would-be waste into sources of power. It is rain-watered, sun-powered. Even compostable waste is anaerobically transformed into carbon-neutral gas you can use for cooking.

Important note here: the king sized loft bed is accessed via a wall ladder, not stairs, so it is vital you have the same agility it would take to, say, climb up to a top bunk.

Hand built by Jerrard Byrne of Designs in Parallel, the house is a masterpiece of craftsmanship. Warm-toned reclaimed jarrah and merbau, you’re wrapped in the rich warm scent of wood, with views on all sides of the forest canopy falling away below.

Cooking options are: over the coals of the outdoor fire pit; on a large hotplate BBQ; on the burner of the biogas system, or if weather sucks, on an induction hotplate or even on the cast iron stove inside. All cooking equipment is provided, plus condiments, teas, Nespresso machine, eggs, your milk/mylk of choice and a selection of farm produce.

There’s split system air con in summer. A
cast iron indoor fireplace for the chill. Firewood is provided.

Outside, a floating deck overlooks sunsets. The Japanese bathhouse-inspired shower area (see pics) is a design masterstroke. An enormous atrium, greenhouse-like, bathed in dappled light. The clawfoot bath outside overlooks the valley. And thanks to the genius biogas system, the carbon-neutral compostable outdoor toilet actually flushes with water.

Guest access
Please note that this is a semi-steep road and while most 2WD vehicles are able to navigate it (given the right amount of oomph), should you wish to park and walk up, luggage can be transported up via trolley or quad bike.

Guests are welcome to wander through the rear of the property where many tracks cut through the bush. Once you’ve arrived, you’ll have your own gate fob for coming and going as you please

I used to be a restaurant critic for the Age, but went “full Covid” in the pandemic: quit my job, got two dogs, moved to the forest, started a farm and collected a full animal menagerie along the way. Learned to build, became obsessed with natural design and zero-waste systems. All on display in this little piece of paradise I proudly crafted.
