So Close, Yet So Far Away

Kakariki Cottage is a little slice of rural respite, tucked away in that perfect place where the city melts into the countryside and you suddenly feel a million miles away, yet are still so close to everything.

Just 40 minutes drive from Auckland CBD, less than 30 minutes from Auckland Airport and only a 5-minute drive from amenities in nearby Papakura – the cottage is well situated for anything from a break from the city to a stop-off en route elsewhere.

I enjoyed the aspect of the cottage – being able to watch the sunset next to the firepit as I made s’mores, the stars as they began to pierce the night sky away from the light pollution of the city, and the golden light spilling through the windows in the morning as I woke in the most comfortable bed up in the loft – there was something to enjoy at all times of the day and night.

When I wasn’t watching the fire dance in the firepit or sipping a cold one on the sunny deck, I was relaxing inside getting my fill of Netflix binges and enjoying the complimentary continental breakfast spread. There were plenty of books and games to keep me entertained, and sometimes it was nice to just sit with a cup of tea enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. The visits from neighbouring ‘Seven’ the young bull (try to guess why he is named that – check out his forehead) were also a highlight – especially when he surprised me with a friendly lick through the fence at night while I was watching the stars!

Beyond the cottage, there is an abundance of places to explore and enjoy – the Hunua Ranges Regional Park was a favourite, with its array of walks and hikes, and of course the beautiful Hunua Falls. I also enjoyed a delicious brunch at the Red Shed Palazzo, which also hosts a Sunday market, and otherwise display and sell a variety of artworks and plants. I was also lucky to be able to visit CCT Lavender Farm during their flowering season (December to February) and indulge in one of their mouth-watering lavender ice-creams (they are still open outside of these months, and have a popular café onsite).

I found it sad to leave as I closed the gate to Kakariki Cottage behind me, but I was seen off by Seven the young bull at the fence and left with happy memories of a special place.

Hunua Ranges Regional Park offers a plethora of walks to suit any ability or timeframe - I enjoyed the easy Hunua Falls Loop Walk, which showcases great views of the beautiful waterfall from different vantage points.

CCT Lavender boasts a stunning lavender farm to rival those of Provence and Tuscany, paired with a popular cafe. Visit between December and February to view the flowering season!
