Cosy Cubby in the Hills
Adventure in Wye River, Great Ocean Road, VIC, AU
Perched in the hills above Wye River, the Cubby House was the perfect seaside escape from the bustling city and making the trip down the coast did not disappoint.
After a gorgeous 2hr scenic drive down the Great Ocean Road, we arrived at our coastal getaway. As its name suggests, the Cubby House provides a great sense of comfort and wonder from the moment you walk in the door. From the spiral staircase to a reading/guitar nook and an array of natural light, the Cubby House is the perfect combination of contemporary and cosy.
Our first morning saw us wake to a stunning sunrise over the water which lit up our room. After enjoying some home-cooked breakfast on the sun deck, we set out for a day trip to Cape Otway Lightstation. Only 1-hour drive from Wye River, the Lightstation is home to Australia's oldest surviving lighthouse which was built in 1848. After a tour of the historic site, we ventured to the local Lighthouse Café which is famous for its homemade scones, which we couldn't resist and highly recommend! With our stomachs satisfied we retired to our relaxing cosy cubby and curled up with some tv and a bottle of wine to see the day out.
After another good night's rest at the house, our final day down the surf coast took us to Erskine Falls. Only a 25-minute drive from Wye River just inland from Lorne, this gorgeous waterfall in the Great Otway National Park stands at 30-metres tall and cascades down into a beautiful rainforest gully. The viewpoints are only a short walk down but there are 230 steps so be aware of this before you make the hike. Ecstatic after our waterfall viewing we were ready to refuel and the Pitstop Lorne was up to the challenge. Serving retro diner-style American food and 50's music on repeat, this permanent food truck sits right in the heart of Lorne and is the life of the main street.
Bellies full and sights seen, our getaway was complete. We finished the day with a walk along the beach, packed our bags and sheepishly waved goodbye to our Cosy Cubby in the hills. As Wye River is nestled along the Great Ocean Road, the Cubby House made a perfect base for day trips out to both Cape Otway and Lorne and we couldn't recommend it higher for your next coastal retreat.

Things We Did
- Lookout
- Waterfall
- Café
This area is home to Australia's oldest lighthouse which was built in 1848. Previously used for navigating ships as well as coastal radar communications during WW2, the historic site is now a vantage point for land-based whale watching as migrating whales swim close to shores during winter and spring. Featuring a scenic drive, stunning coastal views and a famous scone from the Lighthouse Café, this was a great way to spend a day and is a must-visit during your coastal getaway.
Located about 15 minutes inland from the town of Lorne, this gorgeous waterfall in the Great Otway National Park stands at 30-metres tall and cascades down into a beautiful rainforest gully. The viewpoints are only a short walk down but there are 230 steps so be aware of this before you make the hike! We highly recommend Erskine Falls as a must-see during a trip down the coast.
After road tripping the coast and hiking a local waterfall we'd worked up an appetite and the PitStop Lorne was the perfect place to refuel. Serving retro diner-style American food and 50's music on repeat, this permanent food truck fixture sits right in the heart of Lorne and is the life of the main street.
