Finding Bliss at Bangalow Bails

It’s the kind of place that makes you want to throw in your job, move to where it’s green and live the slow, conscious life.

The drive alone was enough to make that morning’s stress seem insignificant. Winding through seas of scenic hills and smelling fresh country air has a unique way of helping you unwind. When your shoulders relax and your body exhales, you’ll know you’ve arrived at Bangalow Bails – a converted dairy burrowed in the heart of the Byron Bay Hinterland.

We were immediately greeted by our new neighbours; a herd of friendly cows who were eager to get acquainted. As we walked into the open plan kitchen and dining area – aesthetically fit out with rustic, exposed wood and recycled farm materials – we knew we had come to the right place. It was perfectly designed to share a meal, a laugh and a wine, and we had a sense that a lot of good memories had been made in that kitchen – we'd be sure to make some more.

Nights were spent stargazing around the outdoor fire, and breakfast was served in the morning sun on the front deck. Complete with books and boardgames, and surrounded by nature walks and local breweries, the property had everything we needed to switch off, unplug and restore. Above all, our favourite feature was the outdoor shower and bath. Sinking into warm water while overlooking lush green farmland as the sun sets is something everyone should experience.

Bangalow Bails is pure bliss.

The weather was pristine so we took the board out for a surf at the iconic Wategos Beach. With white-sand beaches and water so clear you can see your toes, Wategos is a must if you're in the Byron Bay region. The waves are generally beginner friendly, so you don't need to be a pro surfer to enjoy them. If surfing isn't your thing, forget the board and go for a dip. You won't regret it.

The Cape Byron Walking Track was high on our Byron Bay bucket list. You can join the track from a number of points, but we decided to start from Wategos Beach after a surf.

The loop is just under four-kilometres long and, while uphill, is suitable for most fitness levels. We were so distracted by the beautiful scenery, which includes rainforest, ocean views and hinterland, that we hardly noticed the incline. The view from the Cape Byron Lighthouse is unrivalled. We even spotted turtles and dolphins swimming below!

The Bangalow Bails property is enveloped by lush paddocks, waves of green hills and quintessential country views. So naturally, we went out to explore them. We left our phones inside and took our time to stop and soak in the surroundings; the smell of fresh grass, the sound of seclusion, and that sense of ease that comes only from being in nature. We met a few friendly cows along the way and were joined for the wander by a four-legged tour guide – the host's adventurous pup.

Introducing Bangalow's newest craft-beer spot, Common People Brewing Co. The brewery is owned and operated by Northern Rivers locals, who are proud to showcase everything the region has on offer with a beautifully designed and super cosy brewery. The staff were warm and welcoming and gave us great recommendations based on our personal beer preferences. They offer a core range of crafty and seasonal beers plus limited edition Special Batch brews, using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients wherever possible. The food menu is just as impressive, so go with an empty stomach!
