Rustic Cabin at Monga Mountain Retreat

We arrived at the cabin on Friday afternoon, after a busy week of work, for a well-deserved off-grid getaway. We approached through Monga National Park, with the road winding its way through tall eucalypts and tree ferns, and on arriving at the cabin, we were welcomed by a good supply of firewood and a fridge stocked with milk, butter, fresh eggs and a block of chocolate.

Alex prepared the fire as the sun was setting and the cold of the evening crept in around us. We decided to head into Braidwood for dinner, with Elke, the host, suggesting we visit Casanova's Sourdough Bakery as they do sourdough pizzas on Friday nights. It was hands-down the best pizza we've had and they also sell delicious sourdough loaves.

We slept in on Saturday morning and I stoked the fire to keep up the warmth before making breakfast. We then headed into Braidwood, which is 15 minutes away, around lunchtime and had some food at the Albion Cafe on the main street. When we arrived back at the cabin, we spent the afternoon relaxing by the fire and reading books. We also took a walk along the track that Elke and Christopher created, which meandered along the creek through the forest. At sunset, we had some drinks on the porch and listened to the birds.

Sunday morning was slow and easy, and once we had packed our things and tidied the cabin, we made our way to Monga National Park for a bike ride. My partner Alex and I both work as marketing specialists and we spend so much of our time in front of a screen, so spending a weekend in nature, off grid with no technology, was good for the soul. The cabin has such a homely feel to it and the sense of being fully immersed in nature created a relaxing environment.

We both loved our stay and will definitely be back to visit. Elke and Christopher were lovely and super friendly. Highly recommended getaway.

Elke and Christopher have created a beautiful trail along either side of the creek that runs through their property. You may even be lucky enough to see a wombat at dusk or dawn.
