A Nostalgic Summer Getaway at Sommarhus
Adventure in Port Fairy, Great Ocean Road, VIC, AU
Do you remember the long golden summer holidays of years gone by? Where days were spent leaping from hot sand into the rolling ocean, hands sticky with melted ice cream, before racing your friends home on two wheels to devour greasy fish and chips on the back steps of a beach shack.
We'd found ourselves craving exactly that kind of nostalgic summer getaway lately, especially following the birth of our first daughter during an endless Melbourne winter. So when the first hints of Spring sun appeared, we packed the car and made haste to the charming fishing village of Port Fairy.
There, on a quiet street lined with Norfolk pines, we found Sommarhus; the ultimate summer hideaway.
A lovingly—renovated classic 50s wooden beach shack, Sommarhus is airy, full of natural light and gorgeous, intentional style. We felt right at home from the minute we crossed the threshold, thanks to the well-stocked kitchen (complete with eggs fresh from the chooks in the yard), gloriously comfy beds (and a portacot for bub) and thoughtful touches left by our lovely host, Andrea, to make us feel welcome. The vibe is luxe yet also homey, in a way that only masterful design and genuine hospitality can bring to life.
We spent our mornings exploring historic Port Fairy and its surrounds; watching the sunrise at the Griffiths Island lighthouse, brunch at Bank St & Co, wandering along East Beach or the fishing port, and going to spot koalas at Tower Hill. In the afternoons, we spread out a blanket in the sun-soaked garden and enjoyed our first family holiday together, or popped on a record inside and enjoyed some downtime in the light-filled living room before — you guessed it — scoffing fish and chips out of greasy paper on the back deck.
The ideal base for adventures along Victoria’s famous shipwreck coast, Sommarhus is made for a young family, couple, or small group of friends seeking a perfect breezy summer hideaway!

An essential brunch stop in Port Fairy! Delicious and creative meals inspired by travels far and wide and made with the freshest local and seasonal ingredients. Opt for the Asian-inspired pumpkin and zucchini stack with poached eggs or the smashed avo with pumpkin. The coffee is also *chef's kiss*

Faithfully guiding ships since 1859, the Port Fairy lighthouse is a must-visit (especially at sunrise!). Follow the walking track (1.2km to the lighthouse or 3.1km for the full loop) through the gorgeous little reserve and enjoy spotting wallabies in the golden light. Whales also pass by during the winter months, so keep your eyes peeled if you're visiting then.

Noodledoof is a super cool new brewery making its mark in Koroit. Grab a booth and settle in with a beer from one of their 11 taps, sample a tasting paddle, or simply watch the masters at work in the glass-walled distillery. The food is elevated gourmet pub grub; the buffalo-coated cauliflower is an absolute must!

Port Fairy's main beach, East Beach, stretches for 5.8km of beautiful coastline and is definitely the most popular summer hangout spot. You'll also find Port Fairy Lifesaving Club here
Inside what remains of an extinct ancient Volcano you'll find Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve. Declared Victoria's first national park in 1892, these days it's now famous for its views, some of Victoria's best Koala-spotting territory, and an important Aboriginal cultural landscape. Stroll along the boardwalk or tackle one of the many hikes, and keep a lookout for the furry locals (wallabies, emu, kangaroo, echidnas - and the occasional snake! - are all very common here)

Take a stroll through Port Fairy's old wharf and port; the centrepiece of the village's long maritime, fishing, and whaling history that's still an active commercial fishing port today.

Drop into the beautiful Oak & Anchor hotel for a delicious cheese board (washed down with great wine, of course!). Located in a heritage-listed building that's been part of the Port Fairy landscape for more than 160 years, it's also a beautiful wedding and event venue!
