All kinds of cosy
Adventure in Olinda, Dandenong Ranges, VIC, AU
Of course there are many stays one may prefer it wasn't raining, but then there are others that so beautifully lend themselves to it - the Underground House in Olinda is one of them.
Seemingly up in the clouds, we found ourselves beneath mountain ash as tall as sky-scrapers and ancient tree ferns that tell stories of the ages. At the edge of the forest, quietly resting in the mist and the atmosphere of it all lies the culmination of one determined woman's dream; a one-of-a-kind architectural abode, built in the 80's from the very trees that once stood on the home's footprint.
As the heavens opened across the hills we stepped into this thoughtfully designed space and were immediately cocooned by the earth-shelter and the warmth of a crackling wood fire. It's the sort of nurturing haven where each moment melts imperceptibly into the next, and we soon found ourselves lost in the rhythm of the frogs, the pouring rain, and the tumbling hot water as it filled the brass bath; its rising steam dancing across the picture windows. Sinking into the depths of the incredible ornate tub we gazed out at Japanese maples, towering beech trees, and the tranquil streams and ponds outside.
We relished in the coziness of it all, snuggling by the fire with our dog at our feet. With a veil of mountain fog enveloping us we could be forgiven for thinking we'd stumbled upon an enchanted retreat deep in the forest. Yet the charming village of Olinda is only a short stroll away, and the beautiful Botanic Gardens of the Dandenongs call themselves neighbours.
Immersed in nature, oozing with retro vibes, and adorned with original artwork by local creatives, this Riparide was an absolute treat to our senses. It was the reconnection we needed, and I'll be dreaming about this one till I return!
