Forest Retreat

Perched right on the edge of a towering mountain ash forest, Forest Retreat in Upwey felt like a secret hideout just an hour from Melbourne — but a world away from the noise. From the moment we arrived, it was like the trees wrapped us in their own kind of welcome. Liz was already darting between the ferns, my wife taking in the stillness, and me? I just stood there for a moment, breathing it all in, already knowing this would be one of those trips we’d keep talking about.

Morning sauna sessions with steam curling into the cold air, followed by an outdoor shower where you’re so close to the forest you can hear the leaves move. We wandered through the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, stopped for coffee at Maria Café in Upwey, and found warmth (and a little magic) at Micawber Tavern’s Christmas in July dinner, a nice surprise we didn't expect to experience, but totally worth it.

By the time we drove away, I had that familiar mix of satisfaction and longing. The kind you get when a place slows you down enough to notice the little things: My daughter's giggle echoing in the forest, the smell of the fire, the way the light falls in the late afternoon. Forest Retreat didn’t just give us somewhere to stay; it gave us the space to reconnect, reset, and leave with a little more than we came with.

We had such a wonderful experience at Maria Café in Upwey. The staff were warm, accommodating and genuinely helpful, creating a welcoming atmosphere from the moment we arrived. The menu offered an impressive selection of food options, making it hard to choose just one. It’s the kind of place you leave already planning your next visit. Highly recommended for anyone passing through the area.

Perched high in the Dandenong Ranges, the Botanic Garden feels like stepping into a living painting. Rolling hills of colour, winding paths under towering trees, and crisp mountain air that slows your pace without even noticing. It’s the perfect spot for a slow family day out — easy walks, wide-open spaces for kids to run free, and enough beauty to inspire everyone, no matter their age. Wander without a plan and you might just find exactly what you didn’t know you were looking for.

Christmas in July at Micawber Tavern felt like stepping straight into a storybook. Twinkling lights in the middle of winter, the smell of hearty food, and laughter spilling out into the crisp Dandenong Ranges night. It was one of those nights where good company, a roaring fire, and a little festive magic made the cold feel like part of the celebration. Nights like these remind you — it’s not just about the date on the calendar, it’s about the moments you share.

A quick pause at Blacksmith Café in Belgrave — chocolate croissant for me, coffee for the road, and a babyccino for Liz. Just the little boost we needed before diving back into another round of exploring the Dandenong Ranges.
