Finding stillness at Gabarraa
Adventure in Tenterfield, Country NSW, NSW, AU
As soon as we pulled into the driveway of Gabarraa, it felt like the world outside slowed down. Nestled in the rolling highlands of Tenterfield, the property stood surrounded by wide-open views and endless skies. The modern design, with its timber tones and floor-to-ceiling windows, immediately invited us to exhale and settle into the stillness that seemed to hang in the air. From the living room and even the outdoor hot tub, the gentle flow of the creek below framed every view with a sense of calm.
Our mornings began quietly, with the soft glow of sunlight spilling across the hills. Wrapped in a blanket and holding a warm cup of coffee, it was easy to lose track of time watching the mist drift through the valley and listening to the water moving slowly below. There was no rush, just a sense of peace that made every moment feel longer, fuller.
By midday, it was time for adventure. We set out to climb Bald Rock, Australia’s largest exposed granite rock, rising like a giant into the sky. The climb was challenging yet rewarding, with each step bringing us higher until we stood at the summit, gazing over forests and mountains that stretched endlessly in every direction. Up there, surrounded by nothing but silence and wind, it felt like freedom.
Back at Gabarraa, the afternoons were about slowing down again. A gentle walk down to the creek revealed a peaceful spot to sit and reflect, the sound of running water grounding us in the moment. As the evening arrived, we heated up the wood-fired hot tub, sinking into its warmth while the sky above turned dark and brilliant with stars. Stargazing from the tub, with nothing but the sound of nature and the crackle of the fire nearby, was one of those moments that etches itself into memory.
Leaving Gabarraa, there was a deep sense of calm and renewal. The mix of stillness, adventure, and connection with nature made it more than just a weekend away, it was a reminder of how important it is to pause, to breathe, and to find those fulfilling moments that stay with you long after the trip ends.

Things We Did
- Hike
- Walk
Hiking Bald Rock is an unforgettable experience. Located in Bald Rock National Park, it’s Australia’s largest exposed granite rock, standing 260 m high and stretching over 750 m long. The trail winds through woodland before opening onto the massive granite dome. From there, the final ascent takes you up sweeping rock faces with panoramic views that stretch across the New England Tablelands and into Queensland. It’s a moderately challenging climb, but the sense of scale and the views from the summit make it more than worth the effort.
A gentle path winds down from the property to the creek, where the sound of flowing water replaces all distraction. The walk is short but grounding, leading to a quiet spot perfect for sitting, reflecting, or simply dipping your toes in the cool stream. Surrounded by trees and birdsong, it feels like a hidden pocket of calm right at your doorstep.
The Pyramid Track in Girraween National Park is a short but steep hike that rewards you with breathtaking views. The walk begins gently through bushland before leading you between three enormous round granite boulders, like a natural stone gateway marking the start of the climb. From there, the track steepens across open rock faces, eventually bringing you to the summit, where sweeping views stretch across the park’s rugged landscape of granite outcrops and forests.
