Calm Within the Storm
Adventure in Metcalfe, Macedon Ranges, VIC, AU
The shack rose quietly from the rolling hills of Metcalf, perched high above paddocks that seemed to stretch forever. When we first arrived, the stillness was the first thing we noticed. No traffic. No notifications. Just wind through dry grass and wide country sky.
Coffee on the deck, wrapped in blankets, watching a brewing storm lift off the hills. We wandered into Kyneton for breakfast at Social Foundry, then chased waterfalls at the Cascades before returning to cook a barbecue with local meat as the storm came through.
The next day was gentler. A stroll through the Botanical Gardens, long lunch at Fox in the Chamber, then back to the shack for an unplugged evening under a sky heavy with stars.
We left feeling grounded, rested and quietly reset.

Things We Did
- Swim
- Café
- Walk
At The Cascades, the river doesn’t fall in one dramatic drop. It moves in layers. Water slides and spills over wide slabs of rock, carving little channels and shallow pools as it goes. After the storm, everything felt alive. The rocks were dark and slick, the current louder than expected, threading through the bush with a steady rush. It wasn’t grand or crowded or signposted to death. It felt tucked away. Raw. The kind of place where you slow down naturally because the ground asks you to pay attention.
We caught a moment in between rain storms to have a beautiful cafe such at Social Foundry, which we chose because it was dog friendly! We ate outside on the deck and had a yummy lunch!
A beautiful way to spend some time amongst nature, the park is dog friendly (on lead) and felt really peaceful.
We were recommended this cafe by a friend who lives locally in Woodend and it did not disappoint! The Turkey Toastie was to die for!!
