Gem's Soulful Escape

We didn’t expect a tiny house to feel this full of life; this full of soul & this full of story.

We arrived at Gem’s Designer Tiny House in the late afternoon, the light already turning gold. She met us at the gate with a warm smile, and as we followed her up the winding path, the trees closed in around us — thicker, quieter — until the world outside seemed to disappear entirely. Warburton town was only minutes away, yet somehow we felt like we’d stepped into somewhere far removed from anywhere else.

Then we saw it — the tiny house itself, glowing warm and golden in the fading light, wrapped in timber and framed by the forest behind it. Solar panels caught the last rays of the sun above, and a lovely glass door let soft light spill through. Right in front, a beautifully crafted fire pit sat sunken into the earth, a little ladder leading down into it, fairy lights strung above, flowers scattered at its edges. It wasn’t just beautiful. It was intentional, and it was only the beginning.

As the evening settled in, we sank into the little deck chairs out front, coffee in hand, the forest framing every window. Gem had shared with us how she built this place from scratch during COVID — left everything behind, moved to the land, raised a menagerie of farm animals, and poured years of her heart into creating this with her own two hands. Sitting there with our coffee, we found ourselves imagining it all — piecing together, in our minds, how she must have built this piece by piece, from nothing. It filled us with such gratitude just to be part of it, even for a little while.

Inside, the tiny house was equally amazing — cozy, beautifully crafted, and thoughtfully designed within such limited space. A warm timber kitchenette glowed under soft under-shelf lighting, sitting beside an indoor fireplace. A little table by the window was perfect for a meal, a book, or simply taking in the view, while clever built-in cupboards tucked away clothes and essentials without feeling cramped. And then, the lofted bed — impossibly cozy, wrapped in warm lighting that gave the whole space such a beautiful, inviting feeling. That night, we slept better than we had in a long time.

The next day, we ventured into Warburton — a peaceful picnic walk, a visit to the quiet monastery, a wander through the Redwood Forest, and a meal at Babaji’s Kerala Kitchen we still talk about. When we returned, we sank into the outdoor bath, soaking under the open sky, taking in the beauty of the forest around us — the perfect way to unwind after a day of wandering. By evening, we found ourselves back at the fire pit once more, birds settling into the trees, every small detail, right down to the composting toilet, deliberately, sustainably considered.

By the time we had to leave, it didn’t feel like enough.

Some places give you somewhere to sleep. This one gave us a story — of resilience, of rebuilding, of a woman who turned a difficult chapter into something achingly beautiful. And she welcomed us into it with open arms, generous in every way.

Built with hands. Built with heart. Built with everything she had left — and everything she found again.

Highly recommend this place if you want to experience a tiny house like never before — full of life, full of story, full of emotion.
