Adventure in Haumoana, Hawke's Bay, NZ
Some places make it surprisingly easy to slow down, and Freefall Cottage in Haumoana is one of them.
I arrived planning to explore Hawke's Bay, but found myself lingering over coffee on the deck instead, listening to birdsong and watching horses graze beyond the orchards. Inside, the handcrafted timber and thoughtful design details gave the cottage so much warmth, while the quirky headlight windows in the bathroom were a beautiful touch. The king bed was incredibly comfortable, making it hard to leave each morning.
My favourite ritual was soaking in the outdoor bath as the afternoon sun settled over the countryside, glass of local wine in hand.
When I was ready to explore, the two charming seven-speed bikes with baskets were perfect for cruising the region's cycle trails, wineries and coastline. With Cape Kidnappers, beaches and so much more nearby, Freefall Cottage is the perfect romantic escape and somewhere I'll happily return to discover even more of beautiful Hawke's Bay.

One of the most memorable parts of staying here is simply slowing down and soaking in the birdlife. Surrounded by rolling farmland and flourishing fruit orchards, the property is alive with native birds. Tūī fill the air with their distinctive calls, fantails flit effortlessly between the trees, while kārearea (New Zealand falcons) and kākā occasionally soar overhead. Whether you wander the quiet tracks around the property or settle in with a coffee on the deck, there's always something to watch. It's peaceful, restorative, and a beautiful reminder of just how connected this corner of Hawke's Bay is to nature.
If there's one experience you shouldn't miss, it's sunset at Te Mata Peak. The sweeping 360-degree views stretch across vineyards, farmland, the coastline and distant mountain ranges, creating an unforgettable panorama as the sky transforms with colour. Whether you choose to drive to the summit, tackle one of the many walking tracks, or explore the mountain bike trails, the reward is well worth the effort. It's one of those places that makes you stop, breathe, and take it all in. Without a doubt, Te Mata Peak was one of the highlights of our Hawke's Bay adventure.
After a morning of exploring, Pixie Café in Havelock North was the perfect place to recharge. The menu celebrates fresh, seasonal ingredients, with colourful smoothies and beautifully prepared dishes that taste just as good as they look. The avocado on toast was easily one of the best we've had—generously topped, full of flavour, and the perfect start to the day. The welcoming atmosphere and friendly service make it somewhere you'll happily linger over a second coffee. Whether you're after breakfast, brunch, or a healthy pick-me-up, Pixie is well worth adding to your itinerary.
Tucked away in the countryside, Maraetotara Falls is a peaceful escape that's worth the short walk. The gentle track follows the river through native bush before opening to the picturesque waterfall and crystal-clear swimming hole. During summer, it's a favourite spot for locals to cool off, while winter offers a quieter experience where you can simply enjoy the sounds of flowing water and birdsong. Whether you're taking a refreshing swim on a warm day or enjoying a peaceful riverside stroll, Maraetotara Falls is a beautiful place to slow down and experience another side of Hawke's Bay's natural beauty.
