A Rustic Escape in Hawke’s Bay

There's something special about a place that strips life back to the essentials, and Free Fall Hut does exactly that.
Tucked away among the orchards in Te Awanga, this rustic timber cabin invites you to slow down from the moment you arrive. Mornings began with plunger coffee on the deck, listening to birdsong while curious cows wandered nearby and alpacas peeked over the neighbouring fence. Inside, the warm macrocarpa timber and simple design created a cosy space that felt wonderfully disconnected from everyday life.
The outdoor bath quickly became my favourite spot. Soaking beneath the open sky after a day exploring Hawke's Bay felt like the perfect reward, followed by an outdoor shower with orchard views that somehow made even the simplest moments memorable.
With bikes ready to roll, wineries, beaches and coastal trails were all within easy reach. Free Fall Hut is proof that you don't need extravagance to create a memorable escape—just fresh air, thoughtful design, and the freedom to slow down.

A trip to Hawke's Bay wouldn't be complete without spending some time wandering the streets of Napier and taking in its incredible Art Deco architecture. After the devastating 1931 earthquake, much of the city was rebuilt in the distinctive Art Deco style, giving Napier its unique character today. We loved simply strolling through the city, looking up at the colourful facades, geometric details and beautiful old buildings. It's also a great place to grab a coffee and take your time exploring the streets. For anyone who loves architecture, history or photography, Napier is an absolute treat to wander around.
Te Mata Peak is an absolute must while you're in the area, especially around sunset. The views from the top are incredible, with an uninterrupted 360-degree panorama across Hawke's Bay. There are plenty of walking tracks to explore, as well as mountain biking trails for those wanting a little more adventure. We headed up in the evening and watched the landscape glow as the sun dropped, and it was easily one of the highlights of the trip. It's a spectacular spot that feels completely different from anywhere else I've visited and is well worth making the time for.
Maraetotara Falls is a beautiful spot to escape into nature for a while. The walk alongside the river is peaceful and surrounded by greenery, with the sound of running water accompanying you along the way. In summer, the waterfall and swimming hole become a popular place to cool off, but visiting in winter has its own charm. With fewer people around, it feels wonderfully tranquil and is the perfect place for a quiet wander and some fresh air. It's an easy adventure to add to your Hawke's Bay stay and a lovely way to experience the natural beauty of the area.
Haumoana Farmyard Zoo is a lovely little stop for something different while exploring the area. Wander through and meet the animals, then head out on one of the horse treks offered on the property. One of the best parts is that you can spot the horses grazing in the paddocks right beside your hut, making the countryside feel even closer. It’s a peaceful way to spend a couple of hours and enjoy a taste of rural Hawke’s Bay without having to venture far from your stay.
Ajuna Eatery in Napier is a great spot to stop for a relaxed breakfast or coffee while exploring the city. With fresh, seasonal food and a laid-back atmosphere, it’s an easy place to settle in and enjoy a slow morning before heading out to discover more of Hawke’s Bay.
Grab a takeaway coffee from Brown Dog in Haumoana and head down to the beach for a wander. It’s a simple way to start the day, with the coastline stretching out beside you and plenty of fresh sea air. Take your time exploring the beach, watching the waves and enjoying the relaxed pace of this little coastal town.
