Between Mountain and Sea

The allure of NSW's Sapphire Coast and wilderness playground was strong. Yet, unaware to most, less than a 10-minute drive away lay a small, yet beautiful little town, nestled at the base of lush rolling green hills, and an extinct volcano.

On the fringes of Central Tilba, we arrived at this stunning rustic farm studio, meticulously styled using a mixture of modern and recycled furnishings. There aren't too many places you can take a relaxing bath near the fireplace while watching the resident horse Frankie graze in the paddock.

After spending some much-needed r & r in the sun, we set off to explore the magical Glasshouse Rocks, jumped into the water to swim with the seals at Montague Island, spotted migrating humpbacks from the clifftops, and donned our hiking boots to climb the gruelling Mt Dromedary. All within half an hours drive from the studio.

This really is a self-sustaining hidden gem that is close to the action, without the hustle and bustle of inner-city living.

Quite possibly the most fun of all activities in the area is a special swim/freedive with the resident Australian Fur Seal colony on Montague Island. These fast-moving and inquisitive creatures just love to play. Visit at the right time of the year, and you are almost guaranteed to spot whales and dolphins on your 15-min boat ride out to the island....

If you are feeling like a real leg-burner, why not hit the trails and ascend the 5-hour round trip, Mt Dromedary hike. Leave your car at Tilba Tilba, and follow the road all the way up. You'll encounter beautiful rainforest sections along the way, and if you follow the path behind the picnic table, you'll find the enormous ancient boulders, sacred to the indigenous people of the region....

No visit to the region would be complete without a morning tea stop at the picturesque little town of Central Tilba. For the adults, there is no shortage of boutique tea cafes to refuel at. For the kids, a mandatory Lollie and icecream stop at the local Tilba Sweet Spot cant be missed....
