Under Stars and Sky - Architect-designed Stargazing Cabin on Southern Highlands

Down a rough country lane, past paddocks going gold in the late afternoon light, something genuinely different is waiting.

Under Stars and Sky is an architect-designed cabin on working farmland in the Southern Highlands -- a modern interpretation of the Australian slab hut, built by hand over three years. Blackbutt timber milled on-site, a sandstone blade wall, a curved galvanised steel roof. Off-grid, solar-powered, and entirely your own.

The ground floor is warm and unhurried -- a wood-burning Esse Bakeheart at the centre of the room, a window seat that catches the afternoon sun, a kitchen stocked with the essentials and nothing you don't need. A covered deck wraps the front, with views west over the dam and across the paddocks beyond. Below it, a handcrafted timber table made by Darren from trees on the farm — the spot for a long lunch or a slow dinner while the afternoon light changes. Let the evening find its own rhythm -- the fire pit, a glass of something in hand while the paddocks go dark. The stars come out slowly and then all at once.

Steel stairs lead to the mezzanine king bedroom -- skylights directly above the bed, blackout blinds when you want them. Wake slowly as the morning light reaches the paddocks. A handforged ladder from the entry hall leads up to the observatory loft. On a clear Southern Highlands night, the sky is extraordinary. Lie still. Let your eyes adjust.

This is working farmland. The sounds that find their way to you are the sounds of a life running at a different pace to the one you left behind. Cattle calling across the paddocks. The occasional vehicle. Machinery at a distance. These are not sounds that jar. They arrive and pass the way sounds do in open country, and the silence between them is a different kind of quiet. Just a farm going about its day, and then, eventually, the stars.

The dam is below the deck if you feel brave enough for a swim -- the bottom is muddy, the yabbies are rumoured but have never shown themselves.

The homestead is about 400 metres away. You'll catch a glimpse of the farm roof and occasionally see us moving along the shared section of the driveway. Near enough if you need us. Otherwise, the place is yours.

Berrima village is 8 minutes down the road: Georgian sandstone buildings, the oldest continuously licensed inn in Australia, an exceptional Italian bakery, great coffee, fine dining at Eschalot and warm evenings at Josh's Cafe, and platypus in the river if you're patient. Bendooley Estate winery is 10 minutes. Sydney is 1 hour 45 -- closer than it feels when you're here.

Additional Information

Off-grid by design
The cabin runs on solar and battery power. EVs cannot be charged here — they drain the batteries and overload the system. Portable heaters, microwaves, airfryers have the same effect; everything to stay warm and cook is here. If you drive an EV, we're happy to point you to local charging options before you arrive.

Connectivity
There is no WiFi and mobile reception is patchy at the cabin. Download music, maps, and anything else you need before you leave home. Walk a little way down the drive and you'll pick up two bars of 3G/4G. The quiet is part of the experience.

Water
The cabin runs on pure artesian bore water, drawn from deep underground and naturally filtered through rock. We drink it ourselves. Use the filter jug in the kitchen for your drinking water — it's there and it's good. No need to bring bottled water.

The Esse Bakeheart
The wood-burning stove at the centre of the room heats the space, heats the water, and you can cook on it. Allow about an hour for the room to reach full warmth after lighting. We'll walk you through it when you arrive. It rewards patience.

The observatory loft
A handforged ladder in the entry hall leads up to the observatory loft above the stone wall — a small room with a sheepskin beanbag and one purpose. On a clear Southern Highlands night, the sky from here is extraordinary. Lie still and let your eyes adjust.

Fire pit
Available April through September. Closed October through March (total fire ban period). Always check rfs.nsw.gov.au on the day before lighting. Firewood is provided.

Seclusion
No other guests, no close neighbours. The homestead is about 400 metres away — you'll catch a glimpse of the farm roof and occasionally see us moving along the driveway. We can't see in. The separation feels complete.

Arlo and Tui
Our two kelpies may come down to say hello. They are friendly. Please keep the door closed — Arlo respects this; Tui is working on it.

The road in
The final 1.2km is unsealed and bumpy. Low-clearance vehicles are not suitable. Everyone feels a little uncertain the first time. After that, it's just the way in.

House rules
Strictly two guests as booked. No parties or events. Additional guests must be arranged in advance.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The location was beautiful and the perfect place to unwind, slow down and disconnect from the world.

We came here for our honeymoon and couldn’t have picked a bette...r spot. There was so much wildlife to watch and listen to, which made the whole experience feel so peaceful and special. The indoor firewood oven was absolutely epic and made the house feel so cosy.

The window seat was definitely my favourite spot. I could have spent hours sitting there taking in the surroundings.

The hosts were also super responsive and lovely to deal with. We would absolutely come back again!

We absolutely loved our stay at Under Stars and Sky. Darren has created such a beautiful little tiny home, and his incredible craftsmanship is evident in every detail. Laney was the perfect host - wel...coming and thoughtful. We loved the homemade bread!

Our favourite part was simply slowing down: sitting in the sun-drenched daybed playing cards, no TV or distractions, watching the sunset and then the kangaroos appear as dusk settled in. It was peaceful, cosy and exactly the escape we needed. We’d happily stay again!

Laney & Darren We moved from inner-city Sydney to 43 hectares in Berrima in 2013 — not quite sure what we were doing, but certain the land was special. Laney has worked as a vet but more recently for NZ brand, Wilson & Dorset. Darren is a plumber and roofer who turned out to be something closer to a builder, a craftsman and a landscape maker. Under Stars and Sky is Darren's third major build on the property — each one more ambitious than the last. He designed and built the cabin by hand over three years, milling the blackbutt timber on-site, forging the ladder, laying the sandstone. Laney handled everything else. We live on the farm with our two kelpies, Arlo and Tui, a small herd of cattle, and a garden that took us completely by surprise. Our property is named Turnham Green Farm after the London village where we used to live when we were first a couple. We built Under Stars and Sky because we wanted people to experience this landscape the way we do — slowly, quietly, under a sky full of stars.

Adventures on the Property

These are the exclusive natural wonders and outdoor activities within the property boundaries.

Walking The Lane And Beyond

Walk down the cabin driveway, turn left onto the main farm driveway. Turn right onto Old Mandemar Road and keep going. The lane winds between grazing properties — open sky, a creek crossing, birdsong, big old gum trees and not much else. 30 or 60 minutes. Enjoy it.

Stargazing

At 700m above sea level with minimal light pollution, the Southern Highlands sky on a clear night is extraordinary. Watch from bed through the skylights, from the sheepskin beanbag in the loft, or out by the fire pit. A new moon helps. Download an astronomy app before you come.

Look Up At The Stars

A clear view of the milkyway is visible with the naked eye, far away from any light pollution to interfere. Using a star gazing app helps you spot constellations and see our neighbouring planets! Bring a tripod and open up the lens for a 20-30 second long exposure, to capture the night sky like I did here.

Spot The Local Wildlife

At dawn and dusk, our local wildlife can be spotted on and around the property. Wallabies, kangaroos, wombats.. There's a beautiful hours walk you can do in the morning, or alternatively you can see them from your window
